What’s the role?
The Sales & Use Tax Accountant prepares and files sales and use tax returns for assigned legal entities. They ensure timely, accurate information is provided for tax filings and that tax permits and business licenses are up to date.

Here’s what you’ll do:
- Prepare and File Returns: Prepare and file monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax returns for various legal entities.

Review and Approve Certificates: Research, review, and approve sales tax exemption certificates submitted by the operations team and prepare all required resale certificates for suppliers.

Monthly Reconciliation: Perform monthly reconciliation to ensure entries for accruals are accurate.

Monitor Sales Thresholds: Monitor activity and sales thresholds at a state level for potential sales tax exposure due to economic nexus standards.

Stay Informed: Stay informed of current sales tax issues as they relate to the organization and analyze and present relevant impacts to management.

Maintain Compliance Calendar: Maintain compliance/tax calendar for preparation, processing, and filing of sales and use tax permits, required filings, and business licenses to ensure registration and reporting obligations are met on time.

Property Tax Valuations: Prepare property tax valuations, filings, and reconcile data to accruals.

Research and Respond to Notices: Perform research with respect to sales and use tax notices and respond as needed.

Assist with Audits: Assist with sales, use tax, and property tax audits. Analyze and prepare responses to tax authorities as required.

Special Projects: Perform other indirect tax duties and special projects as assigned by management.

Update Vertex Monthly: Update Vertex monthly.

Import Data into Vertex: Import sales tax register and use tax reports into Vertex monthly.

Run Reports: Run monthly sales tax registers.

Manage Vertex Taxability Settings: Manage Vertex taxability settings.

GST/HST Filings: Handle GST/HST filings.
Do you qualify?
-
BA/BS degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
-
1-3 years of sales and use tax experience in a multi-state operations environment.
-
Experience in a high-volume, multi-seasonal environment.

Ability to understand and analyze financial data and prepare various tax filings accordingly.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Strong organizational skills with an emphasis on customer service.

Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.

Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to react quickly to resolve issues.

A continuous improvement mindset.

The ability and desire to develop creative solutions to problems and continuously improve systems and processes.

Proficient in MS Office.

Prior experience working with SAP.

Experience with Vertex Q Series and Vertex Indirect Tax preferred.
The annual pay range for this position is $76,000 – $95,000
The pay offered for this role may be influenced by factors such as job location, scope of role, qualifications, education, experience, & complexity/specialization/scarcity of talent.
This position is also eligible for a performance bonus or sales commissions. ZEISS also offers robust benefits, including medical plans, retirement savings plan and paid time off.
