Telecom Payload Architect – Job profile description
Main Role:
The Telecom Payload Architect will provide specialized engineering expertise in the frame of payload sub-systems and components, in terms of design and analyses, in all phases of a space project life cycle, from design specification to manufacturing, integration, verification phases, up to operations.
Responsibilities
During Design and Manufacturing Phase
- Defines and proposes payload solution and product candidate architectures, allowing to meet stakeholders’ expectations in compliance with standardisation and reuse policies, technology roadmap and business strategy
- To support SEM and Design Authorities providing design trade-off analysis , assessing key performance indicators and parameters
- To provide software based RF analysis to support payload projects, bids and R&D activities
- To capture RF requirements, assess achievable performance of payload architectures, identify improvement opportunities
- To assess the performance of the Payload, as part of a E2E communication system, supporting the design trade-off, optimization of technical margins and the relevant presentation to higher level (e.g. customer) as well as the risk assessment linked to lower level marginality’s (e.g. equipment)
- To perform requirements flow-down, from customer specification down-to antenna/ equipment requirements as well as Ground Segment when applicable
- To identify equipment and antenna requirements, to negotiate them with internal and external manufacturers, to support the selection in case of alternatives
- To contribute to review design documentation
During AIV/AIT Phase
- To provide primary support of payload AIV operations
- To maintain technical interface with Satellite , AIT and Payload Engineering responsible to ensure proper communications test performance and anomaly resolution for payload subsystem
- To review and maintain consistency with Payload AIV documentation for communication subsystem during AIT phase executions
- To support the anomaly management process through anomaly reviews, corrective action development and payload performance analysis
- To participate in AIV/AIT reviews and satellite test activities
Experience / Qualifications
- Master’s Degree or equivalent, with a specialization which includes telecommunication or RF electronics engineering,
- 1-5 years related work experience in RF engineering work, ideally in relation to RF payloads
- Knowledge of payload architecture, design and manufacturing:
- RF equipment, repeater and antenna subsystem
- Link budget and capacity assessment
- Repeater RF performance measurement
- Integration and testing
- Quality control essentials
- Knowledge of UHF and L Band technologies is a valuable asset
- Usage of SW design tools (STK, Satsoft)is a valuable asset
- Experience in antenna and payload equipment procurement activities is an asset
- Experience in programming languages (Java/C) and payload computer simulation (Matlab, Simulink) and design tools is an asset
- Knowledge of QKD technologies and product is a valuable asset
- Knowledge of Cybersecurity architectures is a valuable asset
- Excellent English communications skills both written and oral
- Willingness to learn new technologies and systems
- Ability to work autonomously, effectively and cooperatively in a diverse and international team environment and to define and implement solutions in line with team and individual objectives and project deadlines
- Good analytical, organizational and reporting skills, a proactive attitude to solving problems and an interest in innovative technologies.
