The Defense Systems Group (DSG) provides analysis-based decision support to senior leaders on space architectures, policy and strategy, developmental planning, system of systems engineering, and threat reduction to help shape future space missions across the national security space enterprise. DSG is unique at Aerospace as it not only directly supports major customers, including, the United States Space Force, the Department of the Air Force, the Missile Defense Agency, U.S. Space Command, U.S. Strategic Command, Air Force Materiel Command, and senior leadership at the Pentagon, but also provides a broad range of services and support across the national space enterprise, maintaining vertical responsibilities with customers but also horizontal, matrixed responsibilities across the corporation.
The Launch Systems Division (LSD) helps our customers develop innovative solutions in support of military, human space flight, and commercial applications by interfacing with organizations such as the United States Space Force, NASA, DARPA, NRO, and FAA. Our people provide customers timely, value added, decision quality information and analyses to solve technical and programmatic issues to outpace the threat. We are seeking a well-qualified individual with proven leadership and outstanding communication abilities to be part of a team that supports and shapes the future of the National Security Space Launch (NSSL) program (USSF/SSC) as part of the Assured Access to Space (AATS) Directorate. Our team provides operational and analytical support to the subject matter experts executing test and flight data analysis to support the NSSL mission.
The STARS Mission Operations Center, which is operated by LSD, provides launch telemetry processing, cloud-based data visualization and analysis tools, full-duplex multi-channel voice services, and video monitoring for National Security Space missions. STARS provides technical reach-back for issues that arise during the countdown, participates in tests and rehearsals, and operates and maintains critical technical computing capabilities for NSS launch operations.
Work Model
This is a part-time/casual position in El Segundo, CA, offering a hybrid work model that combines regular onsite workdays and remote flexibility as the business needs allow. It is a part-time role that would work approximately 10 hours per week.
What You Will Be Doing

  • Assess the STARS architecture and identify opportunities for improvement, additional capabilities, and operational effectiveness
  • Develop requirements to maintain STARS Continuity of Technical Operations (COTO) for more modern configuration and architectures
  • Support trade studies for analytical and operational capabilities to support the National Security Space Launch mission
  • Conduct technical assessments of current and future launch operations support needs
  • Support NSSL acquisition efforts by developing telemetry, voice, and video requirements for New Entrant launch systems
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in STARS sustainment and operations and implement solutions
  • Work with Aerospace leadership and customer stakeholders to broaden the STARS customer base beyond NSSL program
  • Prepare technical reports, briefings, and other deliverable materials
  • Critically review reports, briefings, and other materials produced by team members
  • Support and develop customer relationships by participating in briefings and interacting with external senior leaders and executives.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to less senior team members
  • Occasional travel may be required for presentations and meetings with Aerospace/NSSL personnel and U.S. Government agencies throughout the country.


What You Will Need To Be Successful
Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Data Analytics, or Mathematics
  • 15 or more years relevant technical experience
  • Proven experience in space systems engineering, launch vehicles, and launch operations
  • Strong desire to do deep technical analysis
  • Be a proactive, fast learner with the willingness and ability to work in a dynamic high visibility environment with routine engagement with executive levels of government and decision makers.
  • Highly motivated self-starter capable of both independent analysis and collaborating with teams
  • Strong interest and enthusiasm for understanding global launch activities and landscape
  • Ability to analyze technical requirements, produce novel insights and conclusions, and effectively communicate results
  • Ability to guide and mentor team members and develop more effective data processing techniques
  • Collaborate with government customers and identify new projects of interest
  • Effectively prioritize efforts based on a combination of factors (e.g. impact, relevance, findings, etc.)
  • Superior written and oral communication skills; the ability to work well with other analysts and confidently communicate insights and findings and their significance to senior military and civilian leadership
  • Flexibility to learn new tools/capabilities as needed
  • An affinity for challenging puzzles and problem solving
  • This position requires ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret-level clearance, which is issued by the US government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.


How You Can Stand Out
It would impressive if you have one or more of the following:

  • Advanced degree in Science, Engineering, Computer Science, or Mathematics
  • Background in space systems engineering, space domain awareness, space system data analysis, or related fields
  • Experience in telemetry processing
  • Understanding of live data processing architecture
  • Understanding of NSSL program requirements
  • Proficiency with scripting/programming languages
  • Experience with fusing and analyzing information from multiple sources and extrapolating to answer questions
  • Prior experience and familiarity with DoD agencies and organizations


We offer a competitive compensation package where you'll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to our business. The grade-based pay range for this job is listed below. Individual salaries within that range are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge and skills.
