About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.

Combining decades of research, top talent and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.

We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised over $2 billion in capital – more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.

Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.

If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

Join the power movement as a Radiation Optics Engineer

SPARC will be the first of its kind in many ways, including the use of fiber optic sensing arrays inside its magnets to monitor temperature and strain. These sensors will be vital to the longevity of the magnets in SPARC. We are looking for a Radiation Optics Engineer to own the design, execution, and data analysis of optical fiber irradiation and complex optical laser system testing. This role involves heavily diving into literature review, analyses of data, deriving empirical relations, understanding radiation impacts in optical fiber and laser systems, and documenting/presenting results.

The Radiation Optics Engineer will be responsible for handling optical fibers in order to execute complex experimental design setups such as fiber splicing, testing, and incorporation of fibers into complex design features.

The Engineer will also work with a diverse team of engineers, scientists, and work across multiple teams to innovate, problem solve, and develop interfacing optics systems in a complex SPARC environment.

This work is conducted within a multi-disciplinary team of physicists and engineers. Participation and clear, concise communication in design and test activities is necessary to both inform design decisions, prepare prototypes, and execute production.

What you'll do:

  • Optical and radiation test design
  • Data analysis
  • Experimental design
  • Writing thorough technical reports
  • Overseeing execution of experiments
  • Contribute to and shape the growth of an evolving optical fiber and laser systems with low to mid technical readiness levels, applying creative problem-solving and rapid iteration to meet high-stakes deliverables

What we’re looking for:

  • Bachelor of science in one of the following or related fields: Physics, Engineering, Materials, or Optics-related
  • 5+ experience working with fiber optics, laser systems, material irradiation, or related field (having some or all of these skills would be beneficial)
  • Python experience
  • Designing and running optics experiments
  • Laser safety awareness
  • Experience with taking attenuation, insertion loss, and spectral analysis measurements using various measurement equipment (such as OTDR, OSA, OBR, power meter, etc.)
  • Measurement techniques using optical tools and equipment such as interrogators, optical multiplexers, optical switches, fault locators, OTDR, etc.
  • Knowledgeable about various optics sensing techniques, optical attenuation, and insertion loss mechanisms
  • Basic Materials Science knowledge
  • Good communication skills
  • Good attention to detail

Bonus points for:

  • Background knowledge of radiation in materials or fiber optics
  • Material radiation knowledge

Must-have Requirements:

  • Perform activities such as stooping, typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics

What We Do

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.

CFS is collaborating with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with new groundbreaking high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. CFS is now building SPARC, the world's first commercially relevant, net energy fusion demonstration device. SPARC will pave the way for the first fusion power plant, ARC, that will produce power on the grid.

The ultimate mission is to deploy fusion power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change.
