About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.

Combining decades of research, top talent and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.

We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised over $2 billion in capital – more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.

Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.

If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

Join the power movement as a Quality Assurance Manager - Construction

Commonwealth Fusion Systems seeks an experienced QA Manager to oversee the construction quality of SPARC plant systems and tokamak final assembly. This hands-on role demands close collaboration with Engineering, Construction Project Management, the Construction Manager, and Sub-contractors to ensure all quality and design requirements are met throughout the construction process.

As the QA Manager, you will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and successfully implementing Quality Assurance specifications for construction. This includes conducting training, performing audits, and providing field oversight and maintaining the QC and Test documentation.

What you'll do:

  • Develop, update, and implement a comprehensive quality strategy and plan for SPARC construction activities, ensuring alignment with project objectives and overall quality standards
  • Foster strong collaboration with Engineering and Project Management teams to facilitate the execution of Construction Work packages, guaranteeing the flow-down of QA requirements to subcontractors and adherence throughout the project lifecycle
  • Review, approve, and enhance Quality Plans, Inspection & Test Plans, and other QA documentation, maintaining compliance with project specifications and applicable regulatory standards
  • Conduct regular site visits to oversee audits, witness field inspections, and ensure accurate documentation and maintenance of all QC and QA records
  • Work with the Project Engineering team on the Mechanical Completion process for work packages, verifying quality compliance and supporting timely execution
  • Provide comprehensive weekly updates on QC activities, report on non-conformance events, and communicate corrective actions to the CFS team and stakeholders
  • Manage and support contract QA/QC field technicians with daily audit guidance, address quality escalations, and foster a culture of continuous improvement
  • Analyze inspection data trends to proactively identify and address quality issues, implementing process improvements to enhance construction quality
  • Ensure timely follow-up and resolution of Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), minimizing impact on construction schedules
  • Oversee and ensure the accuracy and accessibility of all QA/QC documentation related to construction, facilitating effective information sharing among project teams
  • Develop and implement risk management strategies to identify and mitigate potential quality risks throughout the construction process
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant local, state, and federal regulations and industry standards
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, to maintain transparency and gather feedback for quality improvements
  • Develop and oversee training programs for QA/QC personnel, ensuring they are equipped with the latest standards, technologies, and methodologies
  • Manage resources effectively, including personnel and equipment, to uphold quality standards and optimize project efficiency
  • Utilize advanced technology and tools for quality monitoring and reporting to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of QA/QC processes
  • Directly manage the contract field QC workforce, FTEs and provide indirect oversight of other QC Technicians when they are assigned to the plant

What we’re looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related technical field
  • Proven experience leading quality assurance and control in plant system construction, with at least two successful projects
  • Sound working knowledge of construction methodologies, including the integration of complex mechanical, electrical, and control systems, as well as the management of changes, mechanical completions, non-conformities, and punch lists
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with all levels of the organization and external stakeholders
  • Proficient in quality management systems and relevant software tools
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications
  • Knowledge of relevant codes and standards in the nuclear or energy sector

Bonus points:

  • Experience with Welding Process and Nondestructive Testing
  • Experience with assembly of large metallic components
  • Experience with field testing operations
  • Experience with Commissioning and Validation activities

Essential Requirements:

  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
  • Extended activities such as typing, standing, sitting, etc.
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
  • #LI-Onsite
