Job Description
Summary:
The PV (Photovoltaic) and BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems) Engineer I, is an entry-level role critical to support operation, maintenance, and optimization of PV and BESS assets across ACCIONA Energy North America’s portfolio. This position is part of the PV and BESS Engineering team and requires a strong understanding of PV Modules, Trackers, Inverters, Power Stations, troubleshooting skills, and the ability to work independently.
This position offers opportunities to develop technical expertise in cutting-edge renewable energy systems while collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to ensure system reliability, optimize performance and drive sustainability goals.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate with global PV and BESS Engineering to implement, refine and standardize maintenance strategies, leveraging global best practices and team input.
- Assist in diagnosing and resolving technical issues with Inverters and Power Stations using specialized tools and software.
- Analysis of system alarms and develop strategies to enhance system’s availability and reliability.
- Provide in real-time technical support to PV and BESS Plants for Inverters and Power Stations operation and technical issues resolution.
- Analyze module, trackers and inverter performance data, troubleshoot issues to understand trends and system events for the purposes of reporting and process improvement.
- Development of processes and procedures to safely and effectively operate and maintain Acciona renewable generating facilities for “Best in Class Performance.”
- Respond and provide technical assistance to electrical equipment problems within supported renewable energy facilities. Where applicable, provide subject matter expertise in warranty claims, serial defect discussions, or equipment operational issues.
- Develop reports for management regarding System status and System events.
- Assists higher-level engineers in handling complex problems and analysis.
- Evaluate system conditions, anticipate problems and implement strategies to avoid or minimize issues which adversely impact the renewable power projects under the responsibility of Acciona Energy North America’s System Operation Center.
- Maintain a current understanding of Acciona and renewable generation technology and professional development by participating in various training opportunities and reading Acciona and industry documents publications.
- Maintain, analyze and report on condition monitoring equipment to ensure health and reliability of substation equipment.
- Assist in preparing materials and delivering training sessions for site personnel and teams.
- Participate in conducting root cause analyses to diagnose failures and recommend corrective measures.
- Support compliance with regulatory standards, including NERC Reliability standards, by maintaining detailed records and documentation.
- Assist in planning and executing equipment operations, including switching and tagging procedures, to maintain safe and efficient system performance.
- Work closely with O&M-site team to ensure proactive maintenance and rapid resolution of any system issues.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
Required Skills and Competencies
- 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) accredited university
- Academic or professional exposure to renewable energy or power system engineering preferred but not required.
- Basic understanding of AC and DC electrical systems, including inverters, transformers, and Power Station
- Strong analytical and communications skills, with a commitment to collaboration and leaning.
- Demonstrate continuous commitment to safe operations. Be an active role model and constant resource to the organization.
- Familiarity with software applications such as Microsoft Office, basic programming and diagnostic tool, and software (e.g., SCADA systems, protective relay software like SEL)
- Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams, schematics and technical manuals.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare concise technical documentation.
- Knowledge of applicable safety practices and regulatory standards including NEC, NERC and OSHA guidelines, is a plus.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills, with attention to detail.
- Able to work in an indoor or outdoor environment.
- Ability to travel up to 30 % to support sites across North America.
- Valid Driver’s license.
- Spanish language proficiency (preferred but not required).
