The Role:
At Morningstar, our mission to empower investors drives our work every day. We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join the International Wealth Platform team, where you will take a leadership role in building innovative, scalable solutions for investors and financial advisors.
As a Principal Software Engineer, you will lead a team of talented developers, take ownership of key technical initiatives, and drive architectural decisions that ensure product quality, scalability, and maintainability. You will collaborate with product managers, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to shape the technical vision and deliver solutions that solve real-world investor challenges. This role provides an opportunity to work with cutting-edge technologies, including Azure, .NET Core, and modern front-end frameworks such as Vue.js / React, in an Agile environment.
Key Responsibilities:

• Lead and manage a full-stack software engineering team, reporting to the Technology Manager.
• Own a number of key services within the International Wealth technology estate. Ensuring knowledge is maintained, and service enhancements are implemented.
• Support the development of estimates, and the end to end development lifecycle from shaping, scoping, planning, building and testing the solution.
• Architect and develop highly scalable REST APIs and web applications using .NET Core, WebAPI.
• Enforce Agile best practices, including test-driven development (TDD) and continuous integration (CI).
• Drive DevOps practices, ensuring continuous deployment and operational readiness.
• Analyze and resolve production issues, building instrumentation and monitoring into the systems architecture.
• Own and prioritize the technical backlog, addressing technical debt and ensuring alignment with business objectives.
• Build well-designed, scalable, and stable products to meet market demands.
• Ensure relevant design and run documentation is created and maintained.
• Mentor and guide the engineering team, fostering a culture of quality and technical excellence.
• Solve complex business problems with scalable and innovative technical solutions.
• Collaborate with product owners / business analyst to align on product vision and deliver impactful features.
• Continuously improve team processes, workflows, and tools to enhance productivity and quality.

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, with 9+ years of experience leading/managing software development teams.
• Solid programming experience with C#/.NET, Vue.js, and WebAPI.
• Architecture and development of scalable REST APIs and web applications using .NET Core.
• Proven expertise in scaling web-based software applications and services, addressing challenges such as performance, caching, front-end optimization, and resiliency.
• Strong understanding of web performance best practices, runtime dependency management, messaging, and geographical distribution.
• Hands-on experience with Azure/cloud technologies and familiarity with Azure certification (developer/architect) is a plus.
• Proficiency with at least one modern front-end framework such as Vue.js, Angular, React.
• Solid understanding of securing web applications against common vulnerabilities.
• Strong experience with Agile methodologies and tools like JIRA.
• Exceptional organizational and multitasking skills to manage multiple deliverables effectively.
• Experience with .NET Core applications on cross-platform systems is a plus.
