As a Principal Software Engineer you will help develop the virtual economy at Roblox and ensure that Developers and Creators can earn from their virtual products. Every time a purchase using Robux happens, it flows through Virtual Economy’s systems. Those purchases cover products developers sell in their experiences, avatar items, game passes, private servers among others. Those systems process billions of transactions per year. You will help scale our distributed systems while maintaining a safe and secure economy.
In this role, you will provide insights and reporting to all participants in the ecosystem (users, creators, sellers) so they can understand their sales, and how to grow. You will also evaluate ways in which complex development teams can distribute and share earnings across their contributors.
You Will:
- Develop backend services that scale to billions of products and transactions in a reliable, secure manner.
- Innovate on virtual economy in the metaverse and build the next generation of commerce in the metaverse
- Be a leader for the team ranging from junior engineers to industry veterans
- Work with multiple stakeholders to deliver multiple projects concurrently.
- Help recruit future talent for Roblox
- Have direct impact on the future direction of the largest social platform for play, delivering groundbreaking solutions allowing our development teams earn a sustainable living and build experiences for a global community of over 90 million daily active users
You Have:
- 9+ years of experience developing and supporting highly available and large-scale systems in production, including 5+ years of experience in consumer-facing products.
- 3+ years of experience leading large scale projects
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a similar technical field, or equivalent experience
- Experience working in the gaming industry or monetization platforms is a plus, but not required

For roles that are based at our headquarters in San Mateo, CA: The starting base pay for this position is as shown below. The actual base pay is dependent upon a variety of job-related factors such as professional background, training, work experience, location, business needs and market demand. Therefore, in some circumstances, the actual salary could fall outside of this expected range. This pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. All full-time employees are also eligible for equity compensation and for benefits.
Annual Salary Range
$289,460—$338,270 USD
Roles that are based in our San Mateo, CA Headquarters are in-office Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional in-office on Monday and Friday (unless otherwise noted).

We are requiring employees to be in the office three days a week – with core days being Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. On Mondays and Fridays, employees may choose to work remotely, although the office will still be open.
