Leidos is looking for an Principal Research Scientist with a healthcare background to support the Human Systems Integration division of VHA’s Office of Health Informatics. The Principal Research Scientist will participate in a cross-functional teams in the provision of Human Factors Engineering and Human Systems Engineering Services to organizational customers that aim to optimize overall system performance. The candidate will support the planning and performance of studies for assessments, evaluations, and analyses to provide recommendations for interactive systems to improve their usefulness and usability. Studies may include areas to include usability, macro-ergonomics, human factors, instructional systems design, systems safety, applied analysis, cognitive engineering and interaction design functions. The goal of the program team is to determine user needs by role and perform structured usability testing for critical functionality, including providing baselining and post-implementation assessments, while providing evidence for risk-informed decision-making.
The Principal Research Scientist will be a part-time resource that provides about 15 hours per week in support of the program.
Primary Responsibilities:
Work closely with other team members to :
- Create and maintain reference libraries.
- Summarize findings of published studies.
- Administer surveys and conduct interviews.
- Prepare study mailings.
- Encode research data.
- Maintain study documentation and guidelines such as database dictionaries and subject exclusion criteria.
- Conduct data analyses, such as univariate, bivariate, and multivariate statistical tests.
- Prepare charts and graphs within Excel and PowerPoint.
- Write or edit reports, manuscripts, and educational materials.
Basic Qualifications:
- Doctorate degree / Ph.D. and 8 years of relevant experience in healthcare and/or human factors engineering, including previous experience with data management and performing hypothesis tests.
- Superb time management and organizational skills, great attention to detail, and a commitment to high quality work.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to clearly convey information including basic scientific results.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and an ability to work independently, as well as cooperatively in a team setting.
- Ability to interpret published scientific literature and to conduct systematic literature reviews.
- Flexibility in responding to changing demands, timelines, and priorities.
- Skilled in working with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams., SharePoint).
- Computer skills and experience with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), and other computer programs that support the customer’s research mission.
- Experience supporting studies.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ideally 5 years of experience in a healthcare environment.
- Experience with electronic healthcare records systems.
- VHA domain knowledge.
- Experience with Jira (or Azure DevOps (ADO)), PowerPoint, Visio.
- Familiar with Agile development methodology.

Pay Range:Pay Range $126,100.00 - $227,950.00
