REPORTS TO: Geotechnics & Tunnels Lead – Africa
PRIMARY POSITION PURPOSE
Following our continued growth and success wining and positioning ourselves to deliver current and future Major Projects, we are currently seeking a Principal Geotechnical Engineer to work closely with our other specialists in our geotechnics business globally. The role will be based in one of our offices in Cape Town or Pretoria to help deliver major infrastructure projects locally and globally.
Ideally with 10+ years of experience, you will play a key role in providing geotechnical input at the investigations, design and construction stages and effective project management skills. You will also support the ongoing activities of large multidisciplinary projects such as underground tunnels, caverns, dams, road & bridge design and construction, as well as smaller assignments such as the provision of geotechnical advice to local governments, contractors and private clients.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Building SMEC's reputation locally, nationally and internationally as a leading consultant with a strong reputation for innovation, technical excellence, quality and project delivery
- Help building strong and sustainable relationships with existing or new clients
- Apply project management principles in carrying out assigned tasks and accomplish project deliverables to the required standard and in a timely manner
- Provide expert advice and demonstrate advanced technical skills, ensuring that analysis and design tasks undertaken meet appropriate technical standards and the requirements of the client and SMEC
- Demonstrate high level project management skills while accomplishing project deliverables to the required standard and in a timely manner
- Significant active contribution to the commercial success of projects and the team and contributing to successful business development
- Provide high level geotechnical investigations, analysis and design to clients
- Lead and mentor junior engineers across the team
RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Degree qualified in Geotechnical Engineering or Engineering Geology (Masters or PHD preferred)
- 10+ years’ experience working as a Geotechnical Engineer preferably with an engineering consultancy.
- Significant and demonstrable experience delivering detailed design/modelling, proof engineering, and site investigation works across civil infrastructure projects – dams, hydropower, roads, railways, energy and water.
- PR. Eng desirable
- Demonstrated ability to undertake geotechnical investigations, analysis and design
- Project Management knowledge/experience and ability to manage client relationships and expectations
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively within a diverse and multi-disciplinary environment
