About Merlin:
Merlin is a venture backed aerospace startup building a non-human pilot to enable both reduced crew and uncrewed flight. Backed by some of the world’s leading investors, Merlin is scaling alongside our customers to begin leveraging autonomy today to solve some of aviation’s biggest challenges.
About You:
You are an experienced autonomy engineer that is passionate about maturing research into deployable autonomous systems. You enjoy working collaboratively in teams of people with diverse backgrounds. You are comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and taking ownership of technical features - overseeing them from design to flight testing.
Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the core autonomy stack, including designing and maintaining core libraries in areas such as decision making, path planning, optimization, perception, localization, mapping, and controls.
- Test and validate developed features through unit testing, simulation testing, and software-in-the-loop testing.
- Partner with Merlin’s other engineering teams to analyze autonomous behaviors through hardware-in-the-loop testing and flight testing.
- Collaborate closely with experts in other fields to define tactical behaviors given operational requirements.
- Drive the definition, productization, and fielding of Merlin’s next-generation autonomous operator.
Qualifications:
- Strong engineering background from industry or school, ideally in Robotics, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics.
- Strong foundation in computer science and software engineering fundamentals, including modern C++, Python, and/or MATLAB/Simulink experience.
- Experience and/or demonstrated interest in autonomy in one or more of the following areas: decision making, path planning, optimization, perception, localization, mapping, or controls.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment on solutions for the United States Department of Defense and its allies.
- This position requires the candidate to be able to obtain and hold a U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Security Clearance. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information, which includes U.S. citizenship.
Nice to Haves:
- Experience with distributed and asynchronous systems.

What We Do
All of the sky, none of the limits.
Merlin Labs is building the autonomous infrastructure for the sky above us, enabling goods, and eventually people, to fly without pilots.
The Merlin Labs team is building the definitive autonomy system for all things that fly. We’re creating sophisticated software and hardware that fulfill the functions of a human pilot.
