We’re Lightmatter, the photonic (super)computer company.
The Role
The intern will participate in electro-optic testing of photonics chips, conduct tests on silicon photonics components, operate various optical instruments, design testing protocols, and implement automated testing through Python scripting.
Summary Generated by Built In

Lightmatter is leading the revolution in AI data center infrastructure, enabling the next giant leaps in human progress. The company invented the world’s first 3D-stacked photonics engine, Passage™, capable of connecting thousands to millions of processors at the speed of light in extreme-scale data centers for the most advanced AI and HPC workloads.

Lightmatter raised $400 million in its Series D round, reaching a valuation of $4.4 billion. We will continue to accelerate the development of data center photonics and grow every department at Lightmatter!

If you're passionate about tackling complex challenges, making an impact, and being an expert in your craft, join our team of brilliant scientists, engineers, and accomplished industry leaders.

Lightmatter is (re)inventing the future of computing with light!

About this Role

We are hiring an Intern for our Photonics Charactization team at Lightmatter! We are a photonic computer company redefining what computers and human beings are capable of by building the engines that will power discoveries and drive progress in a sustainable way. With modern human progress relying heavily on computers, the world has hit a dead end with traditional transistors, and the prospect of constantly building data centers is an environmental nightmare. Lightmatter has created a solution in photonic computing: using photons instead of electrons to take advantage of their higher bandwidth. We build chips for artificial intelligence computing. Our architecture leverages the unique properties of light to enable fast and efficient inference and training engines.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in electro-optic testing of photonics chips/devices, leveraging hands-on laboratory experience and working with various optical instruments.
  • Conduct tests and characterization of silicon photonics components, including micro-rings, optical phase shifters, and Mach-Zehnder interferometers.
  • Operate a range of optical equipment such as lasers, electro-optic modulators, semiconductor optical amplifiers, PIN receivers, optical spectrum analyzers, optical vector analyzers, and optical filters.
  • Utilize semiconductor test equipment, including vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, source-meter units, arbitrary waveform generators, and high-speed oscilloscopes.
  • Design and execute testing protocols for silicon photonics chips and subsystems.
  • Develop and implement automated testing and system interfacing through Python scripting.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program, specializing in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, or related fields.
  • Good understanding of Silicon Photonics or General Photonics
  • Experience in electro-optic testing of silicon photonics components
  • Demonstrate problem-solving skills in problems that do not have obvious solutions
  • Exposure to developing and implementing automated testing and system interfaces using Python scripting
  • Data-driven and analytical; translates numbers into actionable strategies
  • Process-oriented and programmatic: builds structure through processes
  • Ability to work independently in a typical lab environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Microcontroller programming
  • Experience with high speed instruments
  • High speed communications and understanding of VNA and optical link
  • Understanding of high speed PCBs and/or micro electronics

What We Do

Lightmatter is a startup photonics company that has pioneered a new paradigm in processor chip architecture that uses photons instead of electrons. Now the leader in the photonic AI compute “space race,” this new class of high performance semiconductors is the foundation of Lightmatter’s mission to enable the growth of computing, reduce harmful emissions associated with this growth, and democratize computing for all.

Lightmatter's technology accelerates critical operations in deep neural networks, using an array of programmable photonic elements fabricated alongside transistors in conventional computer chip fabrication processes. Our close-knit team of engineers has created an integrated photonics chip and ultra-high performance interconnect that is faster, more efficient, and cooler than anything else on earth (or anything ever experienced before) to power the next giant leaps in human progress.
