About the Team:

You will be a member of a newly established, small team with a startup vibe.  You will play a part in producing forward-looking, insightful and timely China-related content—largely based on existing materials and reports of the SCMP newsroom—for our most-valued subscribers.

Purpose of the Position:

You will work under the direction of editors to compile factual information that will be accessed by our premium readers. The information will often be gleaned from the South China Morning Post’s own archives and through communication with newsroom colleagues, but will also include facts and data from third parties. The information you collect will be the basis for value-added articles and visualizations.

In this role, you will: 

  • Research topics related to a wide variety of topics pertaining to China, from laws and regulations to economic and financial data to news and data from areas as diverse as education, science and defence.
  • Help organize information and build information-collection tools that will increase the team’s productivity
  • Communicate with newsroom colleagues in the interest of gathering factual information and contacts that can help provide context on the news of the day
  • Communicate with experts, analysts, leaders and other people with opinions that matter to our subscribers to schedule interviews or other meetings or in some cases to obtain information

Skills and Experience that will lead to success:

  • At least a bachelor’s degree. A major related to journalism or communications is a plus
  • At least two years of experience as a reporter or at least four years of work experience in a job that requires research skills to collect data and other information
  • Native proficiency in written Chinese (Traditional and Simplified)  and fluency in Mandarin Chinese
  • Attention to detail, particularly with respect to preserving information intact when moving it from one place to another, such as when translating or summarizing
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work comfortably with common word-processing, spreadsheet and other Office-type software is required; advanced users of spreadsheets or users with practical coding skills will have an advantage
