Job Summary:
As a Network/comms Space Systems Engineer, you will be empowered to determine what methods of space-to-ground and inter-satellite communication our next-generation systems utilize to best align with the needs of our customers. You will work across teams within the organization to ensure our space network and ground communications are secure and resilient, as driven by a dynamic set of challenges facing operations. Through requirements management, analysis, trade studies, vendor management, and other engineering methods, you will play a critical role in influencing our space systems architecture for today and tomorrow.
Your daily activities will focus on tackling some of the most exciting challenges facing today's aerospace industry. You can expect technical deep dives into the current and evolving designs of our network and communication methods and systems - with a variety of individual and group-centered activities including, but not limited to, creating/reviewing technical documentation, conducting brainstorming sessions, and leading/participating in design reviews. You can expect a great deal of cross-functional team collaboration with peers and subject matter experts across cybersecurity, network management, spacecraft, and ground architecture. You may find yourself interacting with government and/or legal authorities to obtain review and approval of your proposed communication protocols planning for our next-generation systems.
Required Skills:

  • Must be a US Citizen and willing and able to obtain a U.S. Government security clearance at TS/SCI level.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, or a related field of study
  • 8+ years' experience with space and ground systems, to include:
    • Design, analysis, and implementation of satellite communications systems: both RF and Optical.
    • Link budget analysis and frequency planning for inter-satellite and space-to-ground communications.
    • R/F spectrum management, interference analysis, and modulation/demodulation techniques.
    • Satellite communication protocols and software-defined networking (SDN) concepts for dynamic and flexible network management across space systems.
    • Secure communication, encryption protocols, and cybersecurity measures for satellite and ground networks.
    • Precision, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) methods, including exploring alternative methods.
    • Space policy, spectrum management, and regulatory constraints.
    • Systems engineering principles and methods for large-scale space and ground systems.
    • Requirements management, analysis, allocation, verification, and validation.
    • Documenting system requirements, specifications, ICDs, and technical procedures clearly and accurately.


Preferred Skills:

  • Active TS/SCI clearance
  • MS or greater degree in a relevant field of study.
  • Direct experience with the deployment of satellite networks.
  • Familiarity with any/all of the following:
    • CCSDS for data handling and communication protocols.
    • MATLAB, STK, and/or specialized satellite planning and analysis software.
    • Orbital Mechanics, with an emphasis on LEO.
    • Thermal control and power management, including thermal-elastic and mechanically induced exported torques, forces, and stability.
    • Advanced image processing including compression, and filtering.
    • Business development including bidding, proposals, and technology road mapping.


In support of pay transparency at Maxar, we disclose salary ranges on all U.S. job postings. The successful candidate's starting pay will fall within the salary range provided below and is determined based on job-related factors, including, but not limited to, the experience, qualifications, knowledge, skills, geographic work location, and market conditions. Candidates with the minimum necessary experience, qualifications, knowledge, and skillsets for the position should not expect to receive the upper end of the pay range.
• The base pay for this position within Colorado is: $119,000.00 - $199,000.00 annually.
For all other states, we use geographic cost of labor as an input to develop market-driven ranges for our roles, and as such, each location where we hire may have a different range.
