Purpose of the Role
The Senior Network LAN Engineer is responsible for supporting the design, configuration, monitoring, and maintenance of LAN network hardware, systems, and software; including preparing any documentation for future reference and ensuring communication regarding network performance and other issues is provided timely.
Accountabilities
Working in partnership with IAG Tech and the business to:
- Be the lead technical role in resolving complex service incidents, applying diagnosis, maintenance, change, and configuration control attributes to bring about a resolution.
- Consistently perform and deliver outputs within the service contract time constraints (KPIs & OLAs/SLAs).
- Apply technical governance to inbound deliveries from the project design phase to ensure they accurately reflect the live environment and are appropriately structured to enable successful technical service delivery.
- Develop and implement detailed logical designs in areas of – LAN switching, Layer 2/3 protocols, VLANs, and trunking.
- Analyse traffic behaviours, identify, and resolve any congestion or traffic issues related to LAN hardware or protocols.
- Develop robust network designs, maximising the usage of switches, routers, and LAN equipment.
- Monitor LAN performance to determine whether adjustments need to be made and to identify where changes will be required in the future.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to fill information gaps and communicate architecture and technical solutions.
- Establish procedures and best practices for LAN operations.
Qualifications
People Specification
Qualifications:
- Educated to degree level or equivalent experience.
Desired Qualification:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Relevant industry certifications such as:
- CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate)
- CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional)
- JNCIA (Juniper Networks Certified Internet Associate) or equivalent knowledge and experience.
Skills
- Strong technical competence in LAN networking, with a strong understanding of other technologies such as virtualization, storage, and cloud connectivity.
- Strong skills in interpreting, producing, and tracking technical documentation.
- Strong communications skills within a department to provide confidence and direction to level 2 colleagues.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with stakeholders at all levels, from end users to project managers, to support and influence decision-making processes.
- Ability to plan, prepare, and organize large-scale implementations and project deliveries.
- Strong problem-solving skills. Able to identify and resolve problems timely, gather and analyze information effectively, and develop alternative solutions where appropriate.
- Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships and collaborate effectively across teams.
Experience
- 5+ years’ experience required in a similar role.
- Strong technical competence in LAN networking.
- Experience in designing, deploying, and maintaining Layer 2/3 switching and routing environments.
- Strong knowledge of Layer 2 functions and switching (VLANs, VXLANs, STP, trunking, MAC filtering).
- Experience working with LAN topologies and technologies, including switch stack configurations and high availability protocols (e.g., HSRP, VRRP).
- Experience with traffic analysis, congestion management, and QoS within LAN environments.
- Experience with network monitoring tools such as Nagios, SolarWinds, or similar.
- Knowledge of DNS, DHCPv4, DHCPv6, and IP addressing principles.
- Experience in designing and maintaining VoIP solutions over LAN networks.
- Knowledge of industry-standard network system designs and implementation.
- Exposure to automation tools such as Ansible or Python for network configuration and management – desirable.
- Experience with Cisco, Juniper, and Arista LAN technologies is highly desirable.
