Job Summary:

The National Armorer will provide technical expertise and armorer services to the Postal Inspection Service.  The Armorer will support the following: the development and implementation of comprehensive and periodic maintenance plans for all USPIS weapon systems; the acceptance, assembly, testing, repair, and distribution of all USPIS weapon systems; all USPIS Threat Management training programs and perform other duties consistent with armorer responsibilities.  

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Weapons Operation, Maintenance and Safety - Perform maintenance of USPIS weapon systems in compliance with USPIS policy, law, regulations, directives and manufacturers’ specifications. Inspect, clean, maintain, and repair USPIS weapon systems to include semi-automatic pistols, rifles, and shotguns. Disassemble and reassemble firearms to diagnose and fix issues. Build new USPIS agency issued firearms and perform a BUIS and Red Dot zero and functionality test before deployment. Ensure a QC check and live fire is conducted on all new handguns prior to issue and use to BIT and PPO students. Perform accuracy tests and ensure proper functioning of firearms. Stay updated on the latest advancements in weaponry and safety standards Collaborate with DTMC's relating to field firearms issues. Test and evaluate all training weapons purchased for force-on-force applications to ensure consistency between training and live weapon platforms. Inspect, clean, and repair/replace all related firearms accessories including but not limited to weapon mounted lights, optics, optic mounting plates/risers, slings, grips, and holsters. Create and implement a standardized field level armorer kit including requisite tools, procedures, checklists, and spare parts inventory. Attend outside agency or vendor trainings as directed by the NTMC to ensure USPIS tools, equipment, and safety standards meet or exceed those already in place in the wider law enforcement community. Keeps detailed records of all work performed on firearms and provide armorer report.
  • Inventory Management - Maintain the accountability of weapons and equipment in accordance with all USPIS, policies, procedures and requirements. Conduct regular inventory checks and maintain accurate records on firearms maintained, serviced, and repaired. Oversee the process for maintaining USPIS weapon maintenance manuals and conduct audits to ensure the correct information is being captured within all USPIS weapon maintenance manuals.
  • Training - Provide training and guidance on the proper use and maintenance of firearms. Be present at Threat Management firearms related training where required to oversee firearms operations and troubleshoot. Provide SME support to national threat management projects, including but not limited to, basic academy and in-service threat management training initiatives. Assist with teaching the Basic Inspector and Postal Police Officer Curriculum when not armoring weapons.

Minimum Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, or demonstrated relevant work experience as required by assigned project or initiative. Substantial experience performing Armorer duties on semi-automatic pistol, M4 / AR15, and shotgun weapon platforms at a law enforcement agency is highly desired.  
  • Experience with Law Enforcement weapon systems such as, but not limited to; semiautomatic pistols, AR15 / M4 rifle, and shotgun weapon platforms.
  • Experience with Law Enforcement weapon system accessories such as, but not limited to; Trijicon weapon mounted optics and weapon mounted lights. 
  • AR15 / M4 platform Armorer or equivalent.
  • Semiautomatic Pistol Armorer or equivalent. 
  • Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) Firearms Instructor or equivalent.
  • Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) Advanced Pistol Instructor or equivalent.
  • Law Enforcement Rifle Instructor or equivalent.  
  • Demonstrated knowledge, capability, and responsibility for inspecting, maintaining and repairing firearms for a federal law enforcement agency;
  • Experience working with firearms;
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations regarding firearms;
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing at a level of proficiency sufficient to effectively convey technical equipment guidance and instruction to Inspection Service personnel;
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, ability to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with law enforcement personnel at all levels, peers, managers, and vendors;
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize various computer hardware and software applications, such as Microsoft Office suite products, spreadsheets, and databases;
  • Ability to plan and carry out tasks and projects to completion within reasonable specified time frames without immediate supervision; 
  • Ability to provide reports and briefings to USPIS Management as required

Security Requirements/Background Investigation Requirements: 

  • Must be a U.S Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident.
  • Favorable credit check for all cleared positions 
  • Successfully passing a background investigation including drug screening.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

  • Standing/Walking/Mobility:  Must have mobility to attend meetings with other managers and employees. Standing for prolonged and extended periods of time.
  • Climbing/Stooping/Kneeling:  0% - 10% of the time.
  • Lifting/Pulling/Pushing:  0% - 10% of the time.
  • Fingering/Grasping/Feeling:  Must be able to write, type and use a telephone system 100% of the time.
  • Sitting:  Sitting for prolonged and extended periods of time.
