Edelman D.C.’s Earned Media Strategies team, a group consisting of former journalists and earned media specialists, has an exciting opportunity for a Media Supervisor, Energy Transition, Earned Media. This role will lead and execute media relations for our energy clients. The Edelman DC Earned Media Strategies team centers its approach around strategic and creative storytelling. We understand that to generate coverage in today’s media landscape, we must grab a reporter’s attention by approaching media relations with a reporter’s mindset, offering newsworthy story ideas.
In this role you will work in collaboration with account teams across Edelman’s energy pillars and should have an exceptional understanding of the energy media landscapes and the top related stories in the news. This is an opportunity for a team player who has experience serving as the day-to-day contact and manager of media relations campaigns, is driven by the promise of delivering powerful stories to media and has an audience centric mindset.
Ultimately this role is for you if you are a creative, outside-of-the-box storyteller and leader who lives and breathes energy media, and an avid consumer of the energy news cycle, and with a constant sense of what’s trending in energy news. You possess the confidence to counsel clients and executives on effective earned media strategies and partner with colleagues in other departments (account teams, paid, social, etc.) to develop and execute multichannel media strategies and be familiar with all types of news media outlets.
Responsibilities:
- Manage media relations campaigns and initiatives across various clients.
- Regularly work with clients to translate their business priorities into newsworthy storylines and pitches.
- Regularly cultivate relationships with press, coach junior staff on media relationship development.
- Help clients understand what reporters/media are looking for and be able to provide client counsel with an eye toward the current media landscape.
- Develop, manage and implement media relations strategies across both traditional and “new” (e.g. digital-first) communications channels.
- Draft client correspondence and strategies/program recommendations.
- Manage media relations projects and campaigns, function as daily client contact.
- Share best practices in media relations across clients and the Edelman network.
- Supervise projects with junior team members, delegate and provide effective instruction.
- Effectively navigate and manage potential internal/external client issues; showcase an ability to course correct, troubleshoot and provide strategic and effective solutions.
- Commit to continuous learning and improvement of leadership skills; set and pursue stretch goals.
- Effectively project and oversee a large volume of short-term and longer-term/complex assignments on accounts and accurately judge and edit the work of junior team members.
- Understand Edelman and department vision and your role in achieving it.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in storytelling on a diverse set of projects and campaigns.
- Experience managing a variety of different media campaigns and initiatives, such as product launches, milestone announcements, media events, expert/client meetings, etc.
- Established relationships with reporters across a variety of verticals and formats. Track record of success with securing impactful media and coordinating stories and opportunities with limited oversight.
- Experience providing client counsel with proven ability to help influence / educate clients on the role earned media plays within their communications and marketing efforts.
- Ability to research, interview, write and edit a range of media communications (press releases media alerts, pitch emails, post-project recap reports).
- Experience managing and coaching junior staff, particularly with media relations skillsets; proven ability to manage across peers and manage up to senior staff.
- AP style and grammar, spelling and punctuation master.
