Job Description

Summary

Teledyne MEC is searching for an engineer with strong mechanical aptitude to lead design efforts in solution of a wide variety of thermomechanical applications. As Teledyne continues to develop innovative vacuum electron devices that operate at ever higher power densities, advances in precision assembly, heat sinking, and structural support are required to make these state-of-the-art products to meet warfighter needs across the globe. The successful candidate will be assigned collaborative projects that range from mechanical design of new multi part components, including design for manufacturing and performance, to developing the methodology and tooling for their assembly. Other projects would include structural and thermal packaging designs. The role includes participation in continuous improvement efforts and in-depth failure analysis in support of production operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities will include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Timely, thorough, quality completion of all work needed as part of new product development projects assigned such as:
    • Mechanical design and manufacturability of critical subassemblies
    • Thermal analysis of subassemblies and packaging based on localized power dissipation.
    • Design and structural analysis of packaging parts for amplifier assemblies.
  • Working with operations and engineering personnel to draft documentation, including engineering drawings, assembly procedures and travelers as needed.
  • Provide accurate, concise, and up to date reporting on any involved activities. Reporting can be a written document or a meeting presentation. Possible audiences include executive leadership, other departments, or customers.
  • Plan and execute engineering activities, including failure and root cause analysis, implementing corrective actions, or design enhancements.
  • Ensure projects comply with corporate and government policies, adhere to established processes, and meet contractual requirements and performance specifications.
  • Provide technical support for other departments as required, including Operations, Business Development, Sales, and Supply Chain Management. Such support can include input for proposals, review of specifications, vendor evaluation, and disposition of incoming nonconformances as needed.
  • Work collaboratively in teams to achieve the stated goals on time. Requires effective communications within the team. Adaptability to reassess and change direction as incoming data indicates.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience:

Master's degree (M.S.) from an accredited college or university in engineering or physics and 2-5 years of directly related experience, or a bachelor's degree (B.S.) and 5-7 years of directly related experience. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will also be accepted.

                        Desired Skills and Abilities

  • Vacuum electron devices are often large aspect ratio, length to diameter, assemblies of three-dimensional parts that have increasingly stringent requirements for precise location during assembly. Consequently, a strong understanding of and experience with precision alignment methods and applications is strongly desired.
  • MEC manufactures very high power density devices that must operate in demanding environments. A strong understanding of thermodynamics and heat sinking is would be advantageous
  • Experience with thermomechanical finite element analysis is a plus,
  • Skills in the application of motion control equipment, manual or automated, would be a plus, especially regarding assembly and other manufacturing enhancements.
  • Understanding of material joining techniques, including but not limited to brazing, welding or diffusion bonding is desirable.
  • Other skills or abilities that would be helpful:
    • Computer programming/scripting, particularly Python or LabVIEW
    • Additive manufacturing
    • Micromachining capabilities and techniques
    • High vacuum processing and product design
    • Basic understanding of high voltage or RF concepts or techniques

Other Qualifications

  • US Citizenship
  • Active government security clearance or the ability to attain/maintain government security clearance.
  • Ability to travel (domestically/internationally) approximately 10%.
  • Availability to include evenings and weekends when necessary to reach goals and deadlines.
