What Do We Do?
Business Unit: Forge Finish
Here at Athens Forge Finishing, we produce highly specialized steel for markets such as aerospace, defense, and medical. We incorporate many heavy-duty operations to take a roughly forged steel billet and transform it into a usable product for our customers.
Ongoing Projects
1. Machine process improvements by mechanical/electrical design.
2. Capital project work to create new processes for bettering the plant operation as a whole.
3. Frequent work and troubleshooting with fluid power systems such as pumps and actuators.
4. Assisting safety and ergonomic improvement efforts through engineering design.
Your Role as an Intern
You will be a part of a dynamic team, supporting the following tasks:
1. Integration of plastic 3D printing with internal manufacturing solutions.
2. Increased machine reliability through data analysis and improvement projects.
3. Ergonomic and safety solutions through mechanical design.
4. Production process improvements through observation and data analysis.

What Do We Require?
You must be:
- Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program majoring in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology or Process Engineering
- Candidates must have exposure to SolidWorks or any 3D modeling software; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; completed coursework in physics, statics, fluid power or 3D design
- Minimum 3.0 GPA
- Willing and able to work on-site at our Athens, AL location.
- Applicants MUST be US Citizens or Green Card Holders due to Carpenter’s government contracts.
Pay Range
Hourly rates are based on: 1 – Program of study; 2 – Degree type (i.e., Bachelor’s); 3 – Progression in degree (i.e., 1st year, 2nd year, etc.). The range for this position is $21.00-$25.00 per hour.
Commuting/Housing Assistance (If Eligible)
Interns who must commute to work from outside the immediate Athens, AL area (over 50 miles one-way), will be paid a one-time lump sum payment of $2,400 (less applicable taxes) as excessive commute allowance. Interns who choose to temporarily relocate from outside the immediate Athens, AL area (moving over 50 miles one-way), will be paid a one-time lump sum payment of $4,800 (less applicable taxes) as a housing allowance. If applicable, this payment would be made during the first payroll cycle, which would be three or four weeks following the internship start date.
