The Position
The position will be responsible for overseeing internal and external state - direct and indirect compliance, handling state tax audits and notices, evaluating state tax risk, and ensuring realization of state credits and incentives for all Novo Nordisk operations in the US. This role will serve as the subject matter expert on ALL state tax matters, collaborate with tax operations and strategy teams, and work with advisors to ensure optimal State tax outcomes for compliance, controversy and planning including supporting M&A work-streams.
Relationships
Position reports to Director of Tax Operations at Novo Nordisk Inc. (NNI). As part of NNI Finance, continual interaction with headquarters tax as well as line of business personnel at local operations and regional affiliates. Position will interact with external auditors, tax advisors and outside professionals as necessary. Position will prepare, supervise, and manage deliverables independently as well as leveraging members of shared service team, interns and outside consultants.
Essential Functions
- State Tax Operations
- Develop, maintain, and leverage internal stakeholder relationships to gain business understanding and provide expert quality deliverables. This includes securing an understanding of acquired assets and companies to integrate into the existing US state tax footprint and processes in the most optimal manner
- Responsible for the review of all US State Corporate income and franchise tax filings (returns, estimates and extensions), and required payments to external stakeholders, e.g., State and local taxing authorities (standalone, unitary, combined, etc.). This responsibility covers all State supporting workpapers (e.g., addbacks and deductions, allocation and apportionment) including analysis of state-by-state filing methodology (e.g. standalone, unitary, combined, etc.)
- Calculate and analyze proper current and deferred State income tax expense, effective tax rate and income tax balance sheet reporting. Responsibility incudes preparation of annual accrual to return true-up entries and monthly tax account reconciliations for State taxes as well as internal submissions
- Ensure maintenance of well-documented and effective internal controls over State tax processes in compliance with Sarbanes Oxley (Sarbox) requirements, and propose refinements as needed. Responsible for comprehensive State and local tax filing calendars as well as preparation of annual State filing BoD report for each US legal entity
- Oversight of indirect taxes e.g., sales, use, property, unclaimed property, and business tax filings including VAT refund claims for all US companies
- Business Advisement and Planning
- Understand the Novo Nordisk value chain, e.g., research, clinical development, manufacturing, and commercial operations to be in optimal position to provide State tax advice to stakeholders
- Implement State tax planning initiatives and ensure proper process and outcomes
- Maintain current knowledge of tax laws, provide tax research and documentation of key issues via tax memorandums. Understand, explain and implement changes that result from legislative updates and tax law changes
- Ensure best in class processes in capturing, reporting, and achievement of State Tax incentives for base business and expansions. Responsible for oversight of such credits and incentives
- Report tax advice via conversation, written communication presentation, and with Tax team and stakeholders
- Tax Audits and Other Responsibilities
- Support and manage State tax inquires, audits and appeals. Identify, quantify, and report State tax risk for biannual internal tax risk reporting to Corporate Tax as well as prepare risk memos for key risks
- Manage processes, technology, and resources to ensure that deliverables are properly planned, executed, and provided in a manner aligned with best practices
- Support ad hoc projects as required by local, regional, or global stakeholders
Physical Requirements
0-10% overnight travel required.
This is a hybrid role, requiring 3 days per week onsite in Plainsboro, NJ.
Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree required in accounting. CPA license or advanced degree strongly preferred
- A minimum of 5 years corporate tax experience either in public accounting, private industry, or both
- Tax technical competency in US Corporate Taxation with a focus on State, local and indirect tax matters
- Requires demonstrated ability to work independently, as a member or leader of a team using direct or indirect line authority
- Ability to build relationships and collaborate extensively with key business partners and stakeholders
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office. SAP, OneSource or similar experience required
- Ability to organize, effectively manage and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced matrix environment
