Position Overview:
We are seeking a leader to join our growing Scientific Communications (SciComms) team. As a candidate, you are a successful people manager who leads by example, a clear communicator, an effective collaborator, and a proactive problem solver. The role will manage 2+ direct reports and support cross-functional scientific communication initiatives, such as overseeing publication quality efforts and ensuring consistent execution of high-quality scientific and medical publications and presentations. You will have the opportunity to manage and work on a diverse set of projects across disease areas (e.g., oncology, cardiology, neurology, etc.), as well as new efforts (e.g. GenAI-related publication policies). You will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of research scientists, medical professionals, medical science or scientific affairs liaisons, and/or commercial and academic partners to help communicate important research insights. Lastly, you’ll be instrumental in helping scale scientific communication efforts and increasing the impact of Tempus’ products and solutions on improving patient-care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage and coach scientific writers, contributing to overall team development, project management, and high-quality publication outputs.
- Engage with cross-functional stakeholders (e.g. senior leadership, medical/scientific directors, project managers) to support the development and management of the publication roadmap.
- Serve as a lead on the preparation of scientific/clinical manuscripts for publication in top-tier peer-reviewed journals and conference-related materials (abstracts, posters, and presentations), including writing, editing, and proofreading drafts.
- Collaborate on communication-related activities to enhance the visibility and impact of research publications (e.g., support planning efforts, publication-related marketing materials).
- Provide feedback and work with Science writers and authors ensure publications adhere to both external (Good Publication Practice [GPP], International Committee of Medical Journal Editors [ICMJE], and/or journal/conference-specific guidelines) and internal processes.
- Support the creation of other scientific or technical communication documents and projects as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Advanced degree in biomedical/life sciences or quantitative field with relevant scientific/clinical background.
- 3+ years of direct management and scientific/medical writing experience (e.g. medical communications, publication planning, scientific strategy) within an industry, healthcare, or communications setting.
- Exceptional verbal communication, scientific writing, organization, and editing skills, with proficiency with GPP and ICMJE guidelines.
- Proven experience managing diverse research projects to completion and writing/submitting scientific manuscripts, abstracts, and other technical documents.
- Ability to interpret, summarize, and translate primary scientific literature for various audiences, with intermediate or advanced knowledge in areas such as real-world data/evidence, human genomics, clinical research concepts, computational biology (machine learning, statistics, algorithms), and/or oncology.
- Ability to act as an individual contributor and strategic partner.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Adobe Illustrator, Acrobat, Microsoft, and Google Suite.
- Certification from one or more scientific communication organizations (e.g., CMPP, MWC, etc.)
- Experience with/knowledge of generative AI, health economics and outcomes research (HEOR), and/or clinical development.
- Experience with/knowledge of genomic data types and data archiving standards, as well as data and code reproducibility best practices.

The expected salary range below is applicable if the role is performed from [Illinois] and may vary for other locations. Actual salary may vary based on qualifications and experience. Tempus offers a full range of benefits, which may include incentive compensation, restricted stock units, medical and other benefits, depending on the position.
Illinois Pay Range
$100,000—$140,000 USD
