Competition at Frontier

Our Competition team works closely with clients and legal counsel, providing a mix of strategic advice and technical support. We assist in pre-empting issues, in producing and responding to technical analysis, in preparing client submissions and expert reports and in giving oral evidence.

Job Description

Managers are responsible for the long-term sustainability and success of Frontier. As a key contact in the practice, they enjoy a wide and diverse role working with people collaboratively across the Firm. While individual contributions may evolve with their careers, there is an ongoing expectation for Managers to consistently exhibit competence in five key areas:

Intellectual leadership:

Managers are responsible for making sure Frontier delivers rigorous insight and analysis and that Frontier remains at the intellectual forefront of our areas of expertise. To do this Managers must deploy effectively the resources available within the firm, including themselves, colleagues and external resources. Managers must influence the scope of work through collaboration with clients and ensure the work is robust to challenge.

Consulting skills:

Managers must manage internal resources and sometimes external collaborators to deliver high quality, insightful and timely advice to clients, taking full account of their requirements. This requires strong project management skills to adapt as projects progress, plus strong communication and client handling skills to maximise the impact and effectiveness of Frontier outputs. They promote career development and excellence; actively managing work-life balance and staff well-being whilst executing mentoring duties to a high standard.

Client relationships:

Managers are responsible for developing and maintaining strong relationships with clients and collaborators, and potential clients, to contribute to the continued growth of Frontier in a way that is consistent with Frontier's values. This requires commitment to deepening relationships with clients, a knowledge of their wider needs, plus targeted management of development activities to ensure profitable opportunities pursued. Taking an active leadership role within the practice and the firm, Managers adhere to the highest standards of thought leadership, and client and project management.

Developing self and others:

Managers have a responsibility to inspire, motivate, support and develop all members of Frontier - including both themselves and others. Managers are role models, and have a duty of care for all Frontier staff. As well as playing this role through day-to-day work, Managers also have responsibilities to ensure the Frontier mentoring and Career Development R processes are run honestly, fairly and effectively.

Internal Leadership:

Managers are responsible for the successful growth of Frontier in a way that adheres to and actively promotes Frontier values. This includes sound financial management of projects and development work and collaboration on internal activities to make sure Frontier remains a fun and interesting place to work. As senior members of the firm, Managers own all of the firm's policies and processes and must be able to communicate these clearly to all members of staff.

Although this role will predominantly focus on Competition related projects, we strongly encourage all of our Economists to work across Frontier’s different practice areas – that is, to be ‘fungible’. Fungibility benefits both individuals and the firm as a whole, and we believe it is core to maintaining our values and our culture.

In addition to stimulating and thought-provoking project work, we offer numerous benefits to support you inside and outside of work. All employees have access to numerous Learning & Development opportunities including ongoing Career Development Reviews with the support of an allocated Mentor. We understand the importance of work/life balance and offer flexible working arrangements including working from home. In addition we provide 28 days annual leave with the option to purchase an additional 10.

Frontier is entirely owned by its employees. As Shareholders, we encourage everyone to put forward their views. Not only do we influence how the company is run but we choose to distribute as much of our profits as is prudently possible through bonuses. In addition we offer a highly rewarding salary. If you would like to become part of our team, we are interested in talking to candidates who can demonstrate the following:

Essential Requirements:

  • Evident proficiency and experience in competition-related project work.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills, backed by a track record of supporting others and thriving in collaborative environments.
  • Proficiency in thought leadership, as well as strong capabilities in client and project management
  • Excellent communication skills; both verbally and in writing, able to adapt to different audiences/styles
  • Great organisational skills – able to organise a varied workload, prioritise effectively and keep stakeholders updated as appropriate
  • Good relationship building skills – keen to get to know people from across the Firm, attend meetings and occasionally travel to other offices.

Desirable:

  • German, French or Spanish Language (C1/2)

We expect the successful candidate to have the ability to apply a range of microeconomics tools to policy and business issues. Therefore you should have at least a degree with a main focus in economics or another highly discipline. You will also be able to communicate complex economic arguments in non-technical language, and to build effective working relationships with clients and colleagues. It is desirable for candidates to have prior economic consulting experience in competition economics. Should you have any questions or would like any additional information please [email protected]. We are looking forward to receiving your application.

What We Do

We help companies with their biggest challenges – market strategies, regulatory reviews, competition inquiries. And we help governments design innovative policies and regulatory systems.

Economics is (nearly) everywhere and the economist’s toolkit is large. Clients are surprised at the breadth of our work. Not just the costs of supply, movements in demand, pricing and competitive dynamics. But we are also experts in finance, statistical modelling, game theory, market research and even the psychological side of economics. And we’ve worked in almost every sector imaginable, from fertilisers and oil rigs to handbags and iPads.

In some sectors, economics is so critical that we’ve also built specialist knowledge. Our powerful tools and sector knowledge are valuable. But we try not to stop there. Making an impact for clients means understanding the issues, whether it’s the commercial reality of the business; what is really driving customer behaviour; or the political context. We are also aware that our clients want clear and simple advice, from people they trust. So we place a lot of emphasis on our communications, and on human relationships. We provide complex analysis but plain language – English, German, French or Spanish.

Our reports are often used in legal proceedings and so our evidential standards are high. We never “write to order”. Our work is respected because we are independent and obsessive about the truth.
We work with clients all over the world and have offices in Berlin, Brussels, Cologne, Dublin, Madrid, London and Paris. Our sister company in Australia works from Sydney and Melbourne
