Newsweek is looking for a Magazine Designer/Art Editor with a passion for strong editorial layout, publication design, and visual storytelling—plus experience overseeing weekly production and collaborating across editorial channels. This role is central to the visual output of Newsweek’s flagship magazine and will play a key role in managing the production cycle from layout to press.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design weekly long-form feature stories and editorial layouts for Newsweek’s print magazine, ensuring top-tier visual quality, storytelling, and composition.
- Oversee the smooth flow of each issue through the production cycle, coordinating with editors, art director, and photo teams to meet tight weekly deadlines.
- Work closely with the editors and art director to ensure each issue is visually cohesive and on-brand across platforms.
- Maintain and evolve the magazine’s visual identity while responding to editorial needs and breaking news.
- Commission and art-direct photography, illustration, and infographics.
- Contribute to the visual planning of feature stories, covers, and special issues.
- Prepare files for print production, ensuring all layouts meet technical and editorial standards.
- Support content adaptation across digital formats when needed.
Qualifications:
- 4+ years of professional experience in magazine or editorial design, preferably in a fast-paced, weekly or daily newsroom.
- Exceptional layout skills and a deep understanding of publication structure, grid systems, and visual hierarchy.
- Advanced skills in Adobe InDesign, with excellent knowledge of creating tables for long lists, and expert use of paragraph and character stylesheets. Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Knowledge of Figma, Canva and PowerPoint is a plus.
- Proven ability to juggle multiple pages, deadlines, and collaborators under pressure.
- Experience commissioning and directing editorial visuals is a plus.
- A portfolio demonstrating strong editorial design and layout is essential.
- Excellent written and spoken English; flexibility in working hours.
- Familiarity with AI design tools
