The Opportunity

AI is at the heart of our work and technical strategy. Our company sifts through the messy mountain of data that captures each patient’s care journey in whatever format it exists in the real world. To do that, we’ve built a state-of-the-art AI pipeline  that ingests medical records and converts them into a form that is directly useful to patients, clinicians, and researchers. This process enables us to build a timeline of each patient’s healthcare journey, and uniquely positions us to run faster, cheaper, and more flexible clinical studies.

Our AI team’s goal is to capitalize on the latest technology to both expand our core capabilities and to improve the efficiency with which we process records. We utilize the latest in AI techniques, including building our own in-house LLM for processing medical records (read about it here!) But this is just the beginning. We believe that AI will allow us to deliver faster and better clinical studies. Efficiencies gained by AI are critical to our business model.

As an AI Engineer you will:

• Design and build custom AI agents that transform how we run clinical studies, dramatically improving speed and reducing costs
• Create intelligent RAG systems that leverage our rich medical records data to power more effective clinical research
• Identify high-impact opportunities across the organization where AI can eliminate bottlenecks and automate complex workflows
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to rapidly prototype, test, and scale AI solutions
• Continuously evolve our AI capabilities by evaluating emerging technologies and integrating the most promising ones

We are open to both strong engineers who are interested in the latest research, as well as strong researchers who are interested in getting their hands dirty with engineering work.

You are a great fit if you:

• Have 5+ years of experience writing production code in Python
• Have experience deploying LLM-enabled systems in production environments
• Have hands-on experience building RAG applications
• Are excited about the possibilities for AI agents to improve business efficiency
• Are passionate about iterating quickly and solving real problems with AI
• Demonstrate strong architectural thinking when designing scalable AI solutions
• Are energized by the potential to revolutionize healthcare through applied AI
• Enjoy collaborating across teams to understand needs and deliver high-impact solutions

We’re a remote first company, with teammates spread across the US. We support in-person gatherings, including co-working spaces and multi-day onsites,  to build connections and move forward strategic initiatives. Expect to travel 2-4 times a year.  For our team members in the Bay Area, who prefer to work in person we can offer a hybrid set up to work from the SF office on a flexible schedule.

Target Base Salary Range: $180K-$220K

The base salary PicnicHealth offers may vary depending upon the ultimate scope and responsibilities of the position and on the candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total package will include equity, in addition to a full range of medical and/or other benefits, depending on the position offered. Pay and benefits are subject to change at any time, consistent with the terms of any applicable compensation or benefit plans.
