Purpose of the Role:

This is an exciting opportunity to join our high performing legal team as a Legal Counsel. Reporting directly to the Vice President, General Counsel, the Legal Counsel will provide exceptional legal advice to our internal clients and partner on strategic projects such as the formation of funds that shape the future of our firm. lf you enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, have a strong multi-tasking and attention to detail skills, and value working on a collaborative and solutions-oriented team, then this might be the right opportunity for you.  

Core Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal counsel and advice to internal clients across Nicola Wealth.  
  • Act as primary legal point of contact for functions across the company on legal work assigned by the Vice President, General Counsel such as NDAs, contracts, independent contractor agreements, referral arrangements, shareholder agreements, transactions and resolutions. 
  • Assist with general commercial matters including the review, drafting and negotiation of commercial agreements. 
  • In partnership with the Vice President, General Counsel, work on fund matters and fund investments including fund formation, broker agreements and offering documentation.  
  • Assist with reviewing changes to and ensuring compliance with laws and regulations applicable to Nicola Wealth.  
  • Take a lead role in developing and implementing improved processes and procedures supporting legal work including contract review processes, monitoring ongoing legal obligations, etc.  

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • LL.B. or J.D. degree (or equivalent).   
  • Good standing with a Canadian Law Society.  
  • 2-4 years of legal experience with exposure to corporate, commercial, tax, estates and/or securities law.  
  • An interest in capital markets and a desire to work within and learn more about the asset management/investment industry.   
  • A client-focused practical problem-solver with a high degree of business acumen.   
  • Easily builds strong working relationships and collaborates with others.  
  • Team player with a can-do attitude and the desire to work independently with minimum supervision and a high degree of initiative.  
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced work environment.  
  • Fluency in English with excellent written, and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.  
  • Proficiency in French an asset.  
  • Advanced MS Office skills - Excel, Word, Outlook etc.   
  • Self-starter, able to analyze processes and recognize opportunities for process improvements.  
  • Strong written communication skills including document drafting.   
  • Able to communicate with lawyers and tax advisors comfortably and confidently on legal, governance, and compliance matters.   
  • Compliance mindset that prioritizes accuracy and attention to detail.   
  • High level of ethics and confidentiality.   

Compensation & Benefits Package:

This position comes with a base salary range of $120,000 - $150,000 plus a competitive performance bonus, RRSP contribution and participation in our profit-sharing program. Base salary will be commensurate with experience, skills, and qualifications.
