The Role
Under the direction provided by the infrastructure management team, the Lead Systems Engineer, Microsoft is responsible for analyzing business and technical requirements, and for planning, implementing and supporting the Microsoft-based security and collaboration platforms including Azure AD, Exchange, SharePoint Online, Microsoft Teams and other cloud services for the enterprise. This position is also responsible for supporting on-premises Active Directory, Windows servers, and third-party integrations including the installation, configuration, and implementation/migration of modern technologies. The Lead Systems Engineer, Microsoft will work closely with our Senior Windows Engineer and the Technology Services team, while also engaging non-technical business owners to gather operational and technical requirements needed for developing implementation plans.
Responsibilities
- Develop forward-looking security and collaboration strategies and roadmaps that align with organizational objectives.
- Collaborate with the engineering team and vendors to develop, test, evaluate, and implement enhancements, upgrades, and patches.
- Evaluate and engage with vendors as needed for design solutions, implementation practices, and product troubleshooting.
- Direct and assist other engineers in troubleshooting complex technical problems; engaging vendors as necessary.
- Identify, develop, and refine procedures & processes to continuously improve the operations of the IT Infrastructure Team using modern standards and best practices.
- Provide subject matter expertise for Microsoft enterprise collaboration platforms on premises and in the cloud, supporting the Technology Services team.
- Function as a technical lead, understanding existing systems and identifying future needs from both a business and a technical perspective, and developing project plans.
- Support and maintain both on-premises Windows infrastructure and M365 services in a hybrid environment.
- Work closely as part of the IT Security team, prioritizing the safety of the organization’s people, systems, and data.
- Lead the creation, configuration, and maintenance of M365 reporting for management purposes.
- Create and maintain clear, concise procedural and system documentation.
- Occasional travel between our New York and Michigan offices is required (<5%).
- Provide after-hours support.
Experience and Skills
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience in computer science or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 7 years’ experience managing Microsoft servers and M365 collaboration platforms in an enterprise environment.
- In-depth experience with Active Directory, Azure AD, Exchange, SharePoint, and third-party integrations.
- Holistic knowledge of the M365 Suite is required.
- Must be comfortable leading multiple projects and managing day-to-day activities, including coordinating tasks, delegating responsibilities, and addressing any challenges that arise to keep projects on track.
- Ability to plan and direct the technical work of other technical personnel including vendors and service providers.
- Focus on innovation, cost reduction, efficiency, performance, reliability, and administrative management.
- Detail oriented, with a strong focus on customer service.
- Ability to work as a team member and to take initiative and act independently to complete projects when appropriate.
- Strong communicator able to work closely with a multidisciplinary virtual team and have the communications skills to overcome distance between locations.

Compensation and Benefits
At ITHAKA we believe in openness and equity. Part of living those values is our commitment to clarity about salary ranges, so candidates know what to expect. The starting salary for this position ranges from $120,000 to $140,000 per year. Starting pay may vary with job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. At present, our total compensation package for benefits-eligible employees includes medical, dental, and vision plans, an employer-paid 10% retirement contribution, paid parental and caregiver leave, 22 days of paid time off, 11 paid holidays, up to 12 sick days, wellness benefits, and more. Please note that ITHAKA, at its discretion, may make changes to its benefits programs from time to time.
