Job Purpose:  

This position reports to the Vice President, Chief Ethics, Compliance, and Privacy Officer. This attorney will use their experience and expertise in privacy to expand and inform our compliance and privacy organization within TruStage to help our business navigate and succeed across data and technology regulations and developments. This attorney will build bridges among the teams working at the heart of law, business, technology, data, and consumers.  

 

Provides strategic level legal expertise and leadership to management in the conduct of company business for TruStage and its affiliates (“TruStage”) across a broad range of data and technology legal and compliance issues. Effectively builds partnerships with business customers and enterprise stakeholders engaged in artificial intelligence, technology, transactions, cybersecurity, commercial, risk management and data management. Delivers creative, competitive solutions for TruStage. Demonstrates leadership on enterprise-wide strategic initiatives and exhibits strong business acumen. Communicates effectively across a variety of audiences, including executives, technologists, risk and data professionals, among others. Assists in the development of corporate strategic plans/policies and business plans/procedures in conjunction with senior management. Maintains a highly visible presence and countenance that inspires trust and invites consultation from both inside and outside TruStage to advance the corporate mission. 

 

Job Responsibilities:  

 

  • Utilizes a high degree of general business knowledge and judgment, including an in-depth understanding of TruStage operations, customers, programs, and plans to advise management to help TruStage achieve its corporate goals and develop competitive advantages resulting from changing legal and business environments. 

  • Advises on and participates in complex projects, collaborating across legal and compliance teams and with business and technology clients, as appropriate. 

  • Establishes close partnerships with assigned business leaders and their teams. 

  • Delivers innovative legal solutions that anticipate future legal issues related to product, program, customer and operational needs of TruStage. 

  • Monitors and reviews complex new laws, regulations, and case law; identifies and summarizes relevant issues. 

  • Understands interaction in regulated environments between business, policy, compliance, legislative and legal frameworks. 

  • Proactively networks with decision makers and their staff; regularly draws on these relationships to reach team goals. 

  • Takes initiative to understand function/business. 

  • Effectively communicates point of view, even if unpopular, able to push back effectively and influence decisions. Utilizes a high degree of general business knowledge and judgment, including an in-depth understanding of TruStage. 

  • Exhibits strong business acumen in assisting management in the development of strategic and business plans and procedures. 

  • Provides consultation within area of expertise. 

  • Identifies business and strategic impact of legal advice and provides recommendations that evaluate legal and business issues. 

  • Possesses a fundamental understanding of financials and dynamics of supported business unit(s). 

  • Translates legal advice into terms that are business focused.

Job Requirements: 

  • Juris Doctor or L.L.B. Degree and continuing legal education within areas of specialty and responsibility. 

  • Authorized to practice law in the State of Wisconsin or applicable jurisdiction. 

  • Generally 8+ years of experience in privacy, cybersecurity, and/or artificial intelligence laws and regulations, including GLBA, FCRA, CCPA, HIPAA, NYDFS Cybersecurity Regulation, Colorado ECDIS, and others. 

  • In depth knowledge and experience in the processes and procedures necessary to effectively represent TruStage before government and regulatory agencies and in legislative bodies. 

  • In-depth knowledge of applicable laws gained through experience in the insurance and/or financial services industries and formal education. 

  • Ability to recognize current and anticipate future developments in the legal environment, marketplace and TruStage products, programs and operations. 

  • Ability to understand and use economic, financial, and industry data to appropriately balance business opportunities and legal risks. 

  • Ability to interact with clients and other parties in a manner that inspires a high degree of trust, invites consultation and promotes communication. 

  • Significant degree of business acumen to enable attorney to evaluate and propose alternatives that are not only legally permissible but which also make sense from a business standpoint. 

  • Strong analytical skills, creativity and significant experience in analyzing and providing practical, effective solutions to significant, complex transactions and issues. 

  • Ability to lead by influence and cross-functionally, organize and coordinate committees, work groups, project teams and/or task forces and effectively access TruStage resources. 

  • Ability to negotiate, clearly communicate and to persuade others. 

  • Ability to prioritize work and to work under pressure; ability to maximize results using limited resources.

Compensation may vary based on the job level, your geographic work location, position incentive plan and exemption status.

Base Salary Range:

$148,900.00 - $223,400.00
