Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.

An exciting opportunity is available for a permanent Internal Auditor within the Scottish Water Group Internal Audit Team.

The Scottish Water Group Internal Audit Team plays a vital role in promoting and protecting organisational value by providing risk-based and objective assurance, advice, and insight. This independent and objective integrated assurance is designed to improve group-wide operations, processes, corporate governance, internal controls, and risk management.

What you'll do

An Internal Auditor must demonstrate the highest levels of ethics, integrity, independence, and objectivity. Reporting to an Audit & Advisory Manager, you will work collaboratively with the Internal Audit Team to deliver the annual Internal Audit Plan and provide trusted advice to the business. The role is pan-Scotland and will commence in June 2025.

The role involves a range of responsibilities, including assisting in the development of risk-based annual and strategic Internal Audit Plans for the Scottish Water Group of companies. You will execute audit tests and procedures both independently and under the supervision of senior internal auditors and internal audit managers. Evaluating and documenting audit evidence, identifying audit issues, and making recommendations for improvement are key aspects of the position. You will prepare audit reports, conduct follow-ups on agreed actions, maintain and update audit records, and participate in continuous improvement projects within the Internal Audit Team. Keeping up to date with the latest developments and best practices in internal auditing and undertaking ad-hoc work as directed by the Head of Internal Audit will also be expected.

What you'll bring

To be successful in this role, you must be a suitably qualified Internal Auditor or Accountant, with a requirement to obtain an exam-based Internal Audit qualification if not already held. The highest ethical standards, integrity, objectivity, independence, and confidentiality are essential. You should have the ability to plan and prioritise your workload effectively, meet deadlines, and work independently or as part of a team. A strong working knowledge of internal audit, corporate governance, and risk management is required, along with experience in performing and reporting the results of audits and business process reviews.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, CoPilot, and Power Apps, is necessary.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong analytical abilities to interpret complex data, and the ability to evaluate risks and controls while applying sound judgment are crucial. Effective stakeholder management and the ability to gain the trust of others will be highly valued.

A valid UK driver’s license, flexibility to travel, and the ability to adopt a hybrid working approach are also required.

For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), as well as life assurance.

As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.

The not-so-small print

A few final things worth knowing…

Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you’re interested in this job, but don’t tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One. Everyone has a learning curve. So don’t rule yourself out!

Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters!). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.

As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.

Finally (finally!), candidates who haven’t submitted an application in the last 12 months will have their records removed from our recruitment database. You won’t need to do anything. Your data will be automatically deleted.
