About Charm
Our mission is to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO₂. We convert excess inedible biomass into carbon-rich bio-oil and inject it into underground storage for permanent carbon removal. At scale, we can use bio-oil to make fossil-free iron.
Our carbon removal efforts began in 2020 with initial purchases from customers like Stripe, Shopify, and Microsoft. Since then, we’ve scaled to thousands of tons of carbon removal, grown to over a hundred employees, and established three locations in San Francisco, Colorado, and Kansas. Join us in 2025 as we work toward putting 10,000 tons of carbon back underground!
We're expanding our team of ambitious, creative, and hands-on problem solvers. We value psychological safety, collaboration, and continuous learning. We take calculated risks and treat mistakes as opportunities to improve. If you're excited about tackling big challenges, we encourage you to explore our our company values.
Come help us reverse climate change. Gigatons or bust!
About the Role
As Charm matures its injection operations, we need an engineer that can help solve urgent production bottlenecks. The engineering challenges cover a wide variety of disciplines, including chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, automation and controls, as well as a firm understanding of process safety. You will be joining a growing engineering staff that partners with the injection operations team who is ultimately responsible for injecting our bio oil underground!
You’ll thrive in this role if you’re used to designing, testing, implementing, troubleshooting, and continuously improving process equipment, and have experience doing so with tight timelines. You will work alongside external engineering resources and our internal injection operations team to solve the team’s most pressing problems, and spend time in the field with our operators understanding the process and implementing creative solutions to make their work easier. This role reports to the Operations Engineering Manager and will be expected to work primarily with the injection operations team at Charm.
Responsibilities:
- Design and work alongside a team to build and commission bio-oil pumping, storage and transloading facilities at injection pads to ensure safe and efficient movement of bio-oil between tanker trucks and the wellbore.
- Design and work alongside a team to build and commission bio-oil preprocessing hardware for scaled injection operations.
- Design robust and redundant systems that will allow our injection systems to grow to support tens of thousands of tons of bio oil with no single point of failure.
- Perform FMEA on all new hardware in collaboration with process safety professionals. Design and implement safeguards for scaled systems including engineered safeguards and administrative safeguards (i.e. good operating documentation is required).
- Define and implement automation with in-house and/or third party resources to improve safety and minimize cost of storage, transportation and injection of bio-oil.
- Provide ongoing support and act on feedback from the boots-on-the-ground operating team.
- Ensure preprocessing achieves regulatory, measurement, reporting, verification and operational requirements. Collaborate with research and engineering teams on new process development, as needed.
- Ensure risks are mitigated and injection and transload operators implement necessary safeguards.
- Work cross functionally to develop and implement training on these systems.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of professional experience, in addition to the formal education listed above.
- Strong understanding of engineered safeguards. Familiarity with safe work practices and comfortable using Stop Work Authority in production environments.
- Top-notch practical electromechanical engineering experience and an eagerness to learn about all aspects of our process
- Hands on skills to both implement and troubleshoot production equipment in a high stress environment.
- Experience coordinating contractors and engineering consultants to deliver solutions on time and within budget.
- Experience developing written documentation, e.g. work instructions, SOPs, and experience training operators on system operation.
- Ability and excitement to get hands-on with hardware while you work alongside our diverse injection operations team
- Have a proactive, professional and “can do” attitude.
- A demonstrated passion for contributing to our mission.
- A willingness to travel up to 10-20% of the time to our injection sites.
Bonus (but not required):
- Experience with thermal, chemical, electrical and/or mechanical processes and hardware such as work experience in oil & gas, aerospace, automotive or chemicals manufacturing.
- A practical knowledge of industrial pump selection, fluid system design, or batch processing in production settings,
- While not a requirement, experience working around hazardous gasses, combustibles, and/or high energy systems would be considered an asset.

What We Do
Charm Industrial is working to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO₂. We design, build and operate a fleet of mobile fast pyrolyzers that convert ag and forest biomass residues into bio-oil for use in carbon removal and direct-reduced-iron steelmaking.
In 2020 our Chief Scientist and co-founder Shaun Meehan had two breakthroughs (bio-oil intermediate and bio-oil sequestration) that kickstarted the company. Within 10 months we completed our first carbon removal injection and in 2021 we completed more than 5,000 tons of CO₂e removal for customers like Stripe, Shopify and Microsoft.
