The Hydrographic LiDAR Engineer is responsible for supporting and conducting Hydrographic LIDAR surveys in accordance with project requirements and company procedures. Responsible for the installation, calibration, and operation of the Bathymetric Lidar Sensor in suitable aircraft of opportunity. Responsible for day-to-day maintenance of Bathymetric Lidar Sensor and any on-site troubleshooting and system support. Additionally, will aid in the set-up of temporary field offices, the set-up and operation of computers, tide gauges, GPS equipment and other ancillary sensors. Will also be responsible for quality of acquired survey data and may assist with subsequent processing and reporting.
Job Responsibilities

- Conduct audits of aircraft that are being considered to support Bathymetric Lidar Sensors. Such audits will focus primarily on installation, power, cooling and RF interference issues.
- Install and calibrate Bathymetric Lidar Sensor and related equipment in suitable aircraft of opportunity.
- Carry out preventative maintenance for Bathymetric Lidar Sensor systems owned and/or operated by Fugro.
- Work with manufactures and/or Fugro technical support personnel to diagnose faults in acquisition systems and effect repairs.
- Report any Bathymetric Lidar Sensor system problems so that a Systems Engineer can maintain a database of all issues and their resolution.
- Participate in the acquisition and processing of airborne LIDAR (bathymetric and topographic), aerial photography, tide and GPS data.
- Configure and operate Bathymetric Lidar Sensor, including POS/AV and positioning equipment.
- When in the aircraft, ensure that the pilots are fully informed on all aspects of current operations.
- When in the aircraft, work with the pilots to ensure that the correct survey lines are used during acquisition.
- Ensure that quality and safety procedures / work instructions are followed at all times
- Configure and operate GPS receivers and software for static surveys in establishing or extending control, real-time kinematic surveys in collecting ground truth and post-processed kinematic surveys in support of airborne surveys.
- Ensure the correct configuration and operation of all acquisition and processing software and hardware.
- Work with Lead Hydrographer to plan future operations and ensure that correct survey lines are available and that a daily survey plan is available.
- Maintain detailed and accurate acquisition and processing logs.
- Report any problems or concerns related to Bathymetric Lidar Sensor system performance and expected future performance to Supervision immediately.
- Report any problems with regards to safety and/or data quality to Fugro’s Lead Hydrographer – LIDAR, the Project Manager or the Charge Surveyor immediately.
Job Requirements
- Legally authorized to work in the United States or Canada, without restrictions.
- Possess the ability to obtain a valid passport for international travel.
- Must have a driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle record.
- Possess a Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Survey Engineering or related field.
- Have one or more year’s experience conducting LiDAR and/or hydrographic surveys.
- Must have experience in troubleshooting and repairing survey systems.
- Experience in troubleshooting and repairing airborne LIDAR systems
- Knowledge of hydrographic data processing and analysis tools (e.g. CARIS) is advantageous .
- Thorough knowledge of Lidar Sensors.
- Overall understanding of complex electronic, power, cooling systems as well as technical requirements and field data acquisition procedures to support Airborne LIDAR surveys.
- Knowledge of GPS processing software, such as PosPAC.
- Basic knowledge of computer components.
- CAT A or ACSM hydrographer certification preferred.
- Experience in MS Word, Excel, and Access; Internet software, E-mail; Windows XP & 2000 operating systems; Geographic conversion software; AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
