The Role
To begin with, Square Online makes it easy for merchants to start selling online, from food trucks to large retailers. The product has seen tremendous growth since the pandemic but still has an incredible amount of untapped potential.
The ECOM Web (Square Online) team empowers our merchants to create their online Ecommerce website. We accomplish this goal through clear design, responsive interactions, and intuitive information architecture across our buyer and seller surfaces. Our focus this year is on Block Site, which represents our guiding vision for an exceptional online ordering experience. We allow our sellers to focus on what makes them unique by supporting and simplifying complex online purchasing flows that are fundamental to their business' growth. The scope of the Square Online team encompasses all the fundamentals for providing the best experience for these business owners to start to sell online.

As a Group Tech Lead for the ECOM Weborg for Square Online, you will oversee the high-level technical direction of all ECOM Web teams. You will have direct responsibility for helping influence not only the product roadmap, but most importantly the technical direction of our most important features, helping hundreds of thousands of merchants to quickly set up & customize their online presence and operate their businesses at scale. You will report directly to the leader overseeing the ECOM Web teams.
You Will

  • Provide technical leadership across teams for building highly scalable web buyer experiences, influencing the broader engineering organization with web best practices and innovative solutions
  • Define and uphold reliability and performance goals
  • Identify technical risks or gaps across the organization, escalate and resolve code and architectural level concerns
  • Model engineering excellence, and help cultivate our team by sharing your knowledge and thought processes as you solve engineering problems
  • Mentor and coach engineering talents from different backgrounds with their respective priorities
  • As needed, lead and contribute code to critical projects
  • Contribute to company-wide engineering projects with other leaders outside of the ECOM Web org


You Have

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
  • 12+ years of industry experience shipping high-quality products, in the e-commerce industry
  • Proven leadership experience, including roles as a tech lead and managing long-term projects
  • Expertise in mentoring and guiding engineers across all levels in technical and professional development
  • Strong software development and architectural design skills, with the ability to influence strategic technical directions
  • Innate curiosity, and a desire to learn and teach (a must!)
  • Experience building scalable, complex front-end applications.
  • Skilled in cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineering leaders.
