The Group Copy Supervisor is responsible for all copy produced for one or more brands, depending on the size. This role includes directing and/or reviewing all work produced by Junior Writers, Copywriters Senior Copywriters, and Copy Supervisors assigned to the brand(s). The Group Copy Supervisor must be certain that all copy produced meets the standards set by the agency and the client, In addition, the Group Copy Supervisor is hands-on, and does an appropriate proportion of writing as well.

Specifically, the Group Copy Supervisor has the following responsibilities:

Creative/Hands-on work (60%)

  • Team with Group Art Supervisor to produce standout and strategically focused concepts and campaigns
  • Take on appropriate writing projects and own them, start to finish
  • Know the product data and claims, and those of the competition, inside out
  • Manage and work independently, under tight deadlines, while juggling multiple projects
  • Estimate copy hours
  • Participate in client meetings and presentations
  • Attend market research as appropriate
  • Share responsibility with planning to shape strategic branding

Management (20%)

  • Delegate to and supervise the work of staff and freelance copywriters assigned to the brand(s)
  • Manage workloads to maximize productivity of the copy team, ensuring that everyone is busy and billable
  • Work closely with copy, CAD, editorial and traffic departments to ensure that deadlines and budgets are met
  • Provide written feedback for annual performance reviews, and ongoing feedback on the performance of the copy team (written when requested)
  • Interview prospective copy candidates

Leadership (20%)

  • Lead the copy team in development of concepts and execution of all projects from conception to completion
  • Assure that all writers are trained and, where needed, mentored to maintain the standards and expectations of the agency and the client, and to meet their own career goals
  • Demonstrate to clients that you understand and appreciate their products and their marketing challenges and are responsive to their strategic and creative needs
  • Represent the agency at client meetings and social events as required
  • Understand and represent agency positioning, philosophy, and processes

Qualifications:

  • 5-10 years’ agency experience
  • BA or BS degree
  • A proven track record of creative ability and judgment, successful client contact experience, the ability to work collaboratively with account management, excellent presentation skills, successful experience in managing copywriters, availability to travel and the commitment to go the extra mile, in time and effort to produce the very best work
