Building Tomorrow, an international nonprofit organization working to provide literacy and numeracy for all children, is seeking a Grants Coordinator to strengthen our grants team and institutional funding portfolio.
THE ORGANIZATION
Started in 2006, BT supports community-powered learning in rural areas. Through over 500 BT Fellows and over 14,000 Community Education Volunteers, BT has enrolled over 140,000 out-of-school children and reached over 500,000 learners with our signature Roots to Rise (R2R) literacy and numeracy camps. We are excited to reach five million learners by 2033.
Between offices in the USA and Uganda, BT has a full-time staff of over 240, just eight of whom work outside Uganda. POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
The Grants Coordinator will join Building Tomorrow’s Strategic Partnerships team, which is responsible for identifying, cultivating, securing, and stewarding funding from institutional and individual partners, as well as, liaising with volunteers and other stakeholders. In 2023, Building Tomorrow raised over $3.5 million, and we are looking to further scale our programs with additional multi-year investments from philanthropic foundations, individual gifts, event revenue, and multilateral organizations and donor governments.
This position will work with the Grants Manager to lead prospect research and support new business development for selected foundations and other institutional funders, generate compelling and comprehensive proposals, and draft grant and other donor reports and briefing documents.
The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented, motivated, collaborative professional who produces excellent written products and has a passion for Building Tomorrow’s mission. The candidate is eager to learn and exhibits a growth mindset. Working closely with Building Tomorrow’s Grants Manager, the Grants Coordinator will help deliver on our revenue strategy to help scale our proven, critically needed educational programs.
This is a Building Tomorrow Global position, with a preference for candidates based in East Africa. The role can be remote and reports to the US-based Grants Manager.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The responsibilities of the Grants Coordinator include, but are not limited to:
New Business Development
- Research and identify key sources of and trends in foundation support.
- Conduct prospect research, supporting ongoing efforts by the Strategic Partnerships team and working to develop innovative methods to expand the funder pipeline.
- Strategize and implement ways to make current prospect tracking and grants management more efficient.
- Participate in funding strategy discussions.
- Maintain and organize prospecting tools and databases.
Grants Management, Writing, and Reporting
- Expand foundation funding, in partnership with the Grants Manager and other team members.
- Support the Grants Manager in drafting content for grant applications, reports, and letters of inquiry, as well as other materials for funders.
- Independently manage the conception, writing, and preparation of proposals and reports for a small portfolio of institutional donors in the $50,000 range.
- Assist the Grants Manager in organizing files, updating information in Salesforce, and building deliverable trackers.
Other
- Draft briefing papers for Strategic Partnerships team members and organizational leadership.
- Document meeting summaries.
- Assist with other fundraising projects as requested.
MUST HAVES

- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills in English, with an uncompromising attention to detail.
- Flexibility and the ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
- Ability and eagerness to work collaboratively across teams, cultures, and time zones.
- Comfort using Microsoft and Google suite (docs, sheets, etc.).
- Native fluency in English.

What We Do
Building Tomorrow improves access to child-friendly, community-supported schools by providing inclusive, quality education for underserved children in East Africa.
Through our Thriving Schools program, we deploy Building Tomorrow Fellows who recruit and train Community Education Volunteers, together bringing out-of-school children into the classroom while working with school leadership to ensure a quality, inclusive school environment. We also work hand-in-hand with local communities, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Education to construct new primary schools where no formal primary school exists.
By 2021, we will have opened over 81 schools and enrolled over 55,000 out-of-school children. We're not done yet — join us to keep building!
