Job Summary
E.l.f. Cosmetics is looking for a creative, collaborative and strategic Global Upstream Marketing and Innovation Consultant to join our dynamic, fast paced team.
The Global Upstream Product Innovation Consultant will lead the development and implementation of global product marketing strategies and innovation pipelines for existing beauty categories and provide guidance on “upstream” strategic portfolio extensions. This role involves identifying key market trends, assessing emerging opportunities, driving brand growth and capturing market share through innovative product concepts. This can include market landscape assessments, cross-category emerging trends analysis, product innovation and competitive reviews while answering questions like 'where is the market going?' And 'what does the consumer want?'
This role will also oversee innovation from conception to launch, collaborating with cross-functional teams to develop innovation briefs, product strategies, positioning, claims, ingredients, packaging, and more.
The ideal candidate for this role is someone who is always curious and relentlessly focused on understanding global consumer behavior, emerging trends and fostering strong relationships with cross-functional teams. Responsibilities:
- Manage innovation product marketing for existing cosmetics categories to help build segments and support strategic direction.
- Lead "upstream" innovation and strategic extension brand guidance including: market landscape assessments, white space opportunities, product innovation and competitive reviews.
- Utilize market data, consumer insights, and social listening to identify and prioritize new market opportunities.
- Develop comprehensive product innovation strategies that align with market trends and consumer needs.
- Partner and collaborate with Consumer Insights group to inform and provide critical brand portfolio direction.
- Understand competitive landscape, integrate business needs into the product and ensure desired claims are in marketing plan.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams –including Creative, Brand (Go To Market), Compliance, Visual Merchandising, and R&D—to ensure successful product launch from conception to commercialization.
- Partner with Product Development team on ingredients, product formats, clinical and consumer testing parameters for product claims.
- Collaborate on compelling storytelling and marketing narratives for product launches that resonate with consumers.
- Responsible for executing new product innovation briefs to include business strategy, product concept, positioning, target claims, key ingredients, SRP, packaging detail and formula detail.
- Develop pricing strategies based on market positioning and competitive analysis.
- Conduct thorough market analysis to determine success factors for both new and existing product offerings.
- Partner with China R&D on new development opportunities and execution.
- Monitor future product trends in adjacent markets to influence first to market potential.
- Monitor the Global marketplace for category news, trends, insights, competitive activity and inspiration
- Prepare and present product opportunities at Stage Gate meetings required.
Requirements:
- BA or BS required
- 6-8 years of relevant experience in product marketing, innovation, or brand management creating compelling consumer innovation and managing a product portfolio
- Beauty industry background a must
- In-office 3 days per week, 2 days at home
- Must be team-oriented, responsive, comfortable collaborating and driving integration
- Strong sense of personal leadership and ownership.
- Consumer-focused mindset.
- Strong business acumen, including analytical skills and comfort with data.
- Able to work in fast-paced environment, with cross functional partners in multiple geographies (including China), while also demonstrating calm under pressure
- Bias towards bold action, and can execute with speed and quality
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to convey thoughts clearly in PowerPoint
- Ability to act resourcefully and seek out ways to better the brand
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and deliver multiple outputs concurrently under time constraints
- Keen ability to develop, execute, and measure integrated marketing plans
- Genuine passion for beauty, following trends and beauty vloggers; among the first to know about new beauty launches.
