ROLE SUMMARY
Vaccines are one of the greatest public health advancements of all time, resulting in the control, elimination, or near-elimination of numerous infectious diseases that were once pervasive and often fatal. Pfizer has a rich history in vaccine research and development and have designed novel vaccines based on new delivery systems and technologies that have resulted in vaccines that prevent bacterial, vector and viral borne diseases. Over the years, we've played a pivotal role in eliminating or nearly eliminating deadly infectious diseases like smallpox and polio globally.
Today, Pfizer has an industry-leading portfolio of 19 approved vaccines and is committed to developing innovative solutions that prevent and treat disease, with special focus on maternal/neonatal and hospital-acquired infections (HAI).
In a highly visible role, the Global Viral and Maternal Lead will:
- Lead the Global Medical Affairs Strategy Heads and the Global Medical Strategy Directors to establish and develop medical strategy at an asset or franchise and pathogen level, in close collaboration with senior Pfizer Vaccine R&D stakeholders
- As a senior and respected subject matter expert in the clinical Vaccines community, the incumbent will drive Pfizer's presence and reputation within the Vaccines clinical community and be a 'go to' person for key opinion leaders (KOLs) across their pathogens
- Build and develop a team of medical Vaccines experts that have strong knowledge in Vaccines, including the business environment, disease states, competitor data, asset data and synthesize into clear and effective medical strategy, enabling the effective pull through by the Medical Affairs local teams to unlock the full global potential of our existing and future commercially available medicines
The position has broad impact throughout the organization and requires a Vaccines medical professional with an understanding of pharmaceutical business operations (including product development), Vaccines R&D (including Research, early CMC Development, Clinical Development, Clinical Serology and Diagnostics and Operations), products, strategic thinking skills, leadership ability, and strong knowledge about and relationships within the external Vaccines stakeholder community.
The role will partner closely with Pfizer Vaccine R&D stakeholder groups (including Research, Early and Late Development, Regulatory Strategy, Clinical Development and Operations), and other Global Medical Affairs Leads within Pfizer Vaccine R&D, including those for Bacterial/Vector, International Developing Markets (ex US) and Emerging Markets. Outside of the Vaccines organization, partnership with Worldwide Medical, Comparative Medicine / Drug Safety Research and Development and Safety is also required to drive Viral and Maternal Medical Strategy across the organization.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
This position reports directly to the Head of Medical, Vaccines, Pfizer Vaccine R&D and is a member of the Vaccines Medical Leadership Team (LT).
- This leader is accountable for the development of the global pathogen strategies and execution of individual programs, translating cross functional and geographic needs, and clinical / health system stakeholder insights into actionable research and medical deliverables to support the lightspeed development of innovative medicines that result in the control, elimination, or near-elimination of numerous infectious diseases that were once pervasive and often fatal.
- Responsible for Executive Medical Strategy leadership including:
- Leadership of Medical Strategy on Pfizer Vaccine R&D governance committees
- Partnership with Vaccines Medical Affairs leaders in all geographies and cross-functionally with Commercial, and Access and Value to establish an integrated community of experts and oversee the success of the assets within their indication areas
- As a subject matter expert, this role is responsible for collaborating globally with KOLs and scientific experts to inform clinical development and medical strategies for their portfolio
- Provide oversight and monitoring of the Scientific Engagement Program for their portfolio in collaboration with Medical Affairs leadership
- Ensure the pathogen, indication and asset medical strategies deliver end-to-end medical excellence, starting with early development and continuing through the development lifecycle of the brand
- As one of the Medical faces of the Pfizer Vaccine R&D organization for their portfolio, the incumbent will shape the evidence generation strategies in their portfolio by leveraging their deep expertise that enables the extraction of valuable medical insights from diverse stakeholders in the clinical community
- Ensure continuity in evidence generation plans and identify gaps to be addressed through clinical development, ISTs, CRCs or other Medically driven research
- Alignment of resources (direct & indirect) to facilitate quality lightspeed delivery on Pfizer Vaccine R&D strategic imperatives, in alignment with clinical development and commercial priorities
- Provide executive leadership as a portfolio liaison across clinical development partnerships and collaborations (JDC, JSC, Joint Medical Affairs Working Groups with partners)
- Oversight of the creation of a compelling scientific communications and publication plan based on the clinical trials conducted within Pfizer Vaccine R&D
- Ensuring that Medical Education programs keep up with and adequately reflect the rapidly advancing scientific landscape, including innovative vaccine solutions across a number of viral and maternal disease areas
- Represent Pfizer and Pfizer Vaccine R&D at the leading Therapeutic Area Medical / Clinical / Scientific Conferences/Congresses, KOL Panels and Clinical Trial Steering Groups, in order to maintain and build relationships with KOLs and the wider clinical community
- Be a 'voice' for field teams within the Pfizer Vaccine R&D organization, ensuring that field medical perspectives are transmitted to discussions of clinical development are integrated into strategy development to support launch and post-launch success
QUALIFICATIONS
- Clinically trained (MD, ClinPharm), PharmD, MD-PhD desired
- Vaccine medical professional with strong experience (at least 9 years if MD, ClinPharm or MD-PhD, at least 15 years if PhD or PharmD) in the pharmaceutical or biopharma industry with clinical development, and/or medical affairs experience
- A leader who can work collaboratively across a complex cross functional team of stakeholders. Must be able to lead with a lightspeed, innovative, and entrepreneurial mindset
- Extensive experience and strong understanding of biopharmaceutical drug development, the competitive landscape / vaccine market dynamics / evolving treatment landscape and HCP and patient insights, bringing deep clinical and external stakeholder insights to decision making
- A recognized leader in the viral and maternal medical field, able to build and maintain strong relationships with senior academics, investigators and KOLs
- Proven expertise in fostering employee development and well-being through effective people development, and motivational team leadership
- A strong ability to influence all levels of the organization, including both senior-level colleagues and other levels across the company
- Must have executive leadership skills, able to lead and motivate a team of medical experts that have strong knowledge in vaccines and are medical leaders on the Global Medicine Teams
- A strategic leader, able to work within a matrix organization with a high proficiency in problem solving, strong analytical skills and an ability to lead through complexity and ambiguity

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $280,400.00 to $467,400.00. In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer's Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 30.0% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program.
