At Genentech Computational Sciences (gCS), Computational Catalysts, we are on a mission to partner across the organization to realize the potential of data, technology and computational approaches that will revolutionize how targets and therapeutics are discovered and developed, ultimately enabling novel treatments for patients across the world.  We stand at the beginning of an exciting journey.  

The Computational Catalysts group within gCS is a diverse, curious and action-driven team at the intersection of computation, engineering and science with ambition to advance our technical excellence. The focus of the team is on partnering with the informatics and scientific communities to create a computational and data ecosystem that powers scientific discovery and accelerates decision making.  We aim to modernize our ability to acquire, store, link, share, find and analyze data across the organization through scalable and integrated solutions that truly make every data point count.

We are seeking a talented full stack developer with strong UX and design skills to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for creating intuitive and visually appealing user interfaces, as well as the technical expertise to bring these designs to life. You will work closely with a diverse team of professionals, including scientists, to develop tools that support cutting-edge biological research at the boundary of artificial intelligence and sophisticated in-vitro models like organoids.

Onsite presence, on our South San Francisco campus, is expected for at least 3 days a week

The Opportunity:

  • Design, develop, and maintain user-friendly and responsive web UI in JavaScript/React/Apollo

  • Construct and implement GraphQL schema

  • Develop and maintain backend systems with Node.js

  • Design and optimize SQL database schemas and queries for efficient data storage and retrieval

  • Contribute code to other cloud based services written in Python

  • Write and maintain robust suite of tests to ensure the functionality and integrity of the developed applications

  • Deliver high-quality UX designs and contribute to the overall design language and patterns of the product

  • Create wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity mockups to communicate design ideas effectively

  • Implement UI/UX designs into functional web applications

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with the team to understand user needs and translate them into user-friendly and aesthetic user interfaces

  • Collaborate closely with a team of scientists to build tools that assist in ground-breaking biology research

Who You Are:

  • Provable track record of constructing quality, user-friendly tools in a fast-paced environment

  • 4-7 years of proven experience with React

  • At least 2 years of experience with Python and SQL

  • UX and design skills with the ability to showcase previous user-centric designs

  • Proficiency in design tools such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe XD, or similar

  • Experience working on cloud-native architectures in public clouds (ideally AWS)

  • Good communication skills for collaborating with a diverse team of professionals

  • Ability to quickly acquire new technologies and programming languages

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Design, or a related field, or equivalent experience

Preferred but not required:

  • Experience with biological data and processes is a strong plus

  • Experience working with scientists or in a research environment is advantageous

Relocation benefits are available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $142,500 - $264,700 of hiring range.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
