Newsweek is seeking a freelance news reporter with a focus on Middle East coverage to work on a flexible self-employed basis.
The ideal candidate will have detailed knowledge of the Middle East and its place in the region and the world — with a particular focus on U.S. relationships. They will have a skillful approach to writing engaging stories that will work for an audience in the United States and worldwide. Newsweek is looking for reporters with skills in key languages in the region, notably Arabic and Farsi.
The freelance candidate will be able to research, source, pitch, and write several stories each day, including breaking news, original news and features, interviews, and exclusives. They will obtain source and expert comments and use authoritative primary sources. They will produce vibrant, concise and clean copy to deadline.
They will have a strong understanding of digital journalism and the needs of a fast-paced newsroom. They will be adept at monitoring social media and Google Trends to find and identify stories and topics of interest to a predominantly U.S. audience. They will be responsible for ensuring high-quality coverage that is accurate, fair, and conforms to accepted standards of journalism.
The candidate will be offered work on various days as mutually agreed, from 6am to 3pm UK time.
Services, as mutually agreed:
- Research, source, pitch, and write several stories each day.
- Scour multiple social media for stories and emerging trends.
- Check facts and sources and ensure content is of the highest possible standard.
- Ensure that all stories published conform to Newsweek’s standards.
- Deliver high-quality reporting that is accurate, fair, and conforms to accepted standards of journalism.
Requirements:
- Relevant experience of news reporting for a reputable organization.
- Familiarity with using social media and Google trends to find stories.
- Ability to report on news in the Middle East impartially.
- Capable of working to tight deadlines.
Desirable:
- Experience and familiarity covering Middle East news and trends.
- Ability to read and speak Arabic or Farsi
