Trash stinks. Together, we can do better. Mill has created a new system to help you outsmart waste at home.
The Role
As a Firmware Engineering Intern, you'll develop IoT firmware solutions, design resilient code, and collaborate with teams to optimize performance and connectivity.
Summary Generated by Built In

Mill is all about answering a simple question: how can we prevent waste? Less waste can save time, money, energy, maybe even our planet. And there’s no better place to start than food. Food waste is one of the most solvable climate problems facing us today. Plus, our trash really stinks. It’s gross, heavy, and our least favorite chore. At Mill we are striving to build a better environment for all, as we take on climate and kitchen change.

Join our firmware team to help develop cutting-edge IoT solutions! As a Firmware Engineering Intern, you will contribute to the development of intelligent firmware solutions for our next-generation products. In our fast-paced environment, you’ll collaborate with cloud, data, and hardware experts to craft efficient, scalable, and robust systems. We’re seeking a self-motivated individual with a passion for learning and a knack for solving challenging technical problems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement resilient firmware for memory-constrained microcontrollers, incorporating essential features such as wireless connectivity, sensor integration, and secure data transmission.
  • Tackle complex challenges including offline data logging and high-performance data upload pipelines.
  • Write optimized low-level code interfacing with hardware peripherals (e.g., RF modules, sensors) using standard protocols such as GPIO, I2C, SPI, and UART.
  • Apply best practices for error handling and performance optimization to support robust connectivity features.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to rigorously debug, test, and troubleshoot firmware, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and security.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or related field that can demonstrate equivalent experience.
  • Solid understanding of computer systems, networking, and firmware development for data-centric applications.
  • Proficiency in C programming for embedded systems, with an emphasis on memory management and real-time operating system concepts.
  • Experience using troubleshooting tools such as debuggers.
  • Excellent analytical abilities combined with strong communication skills.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with ESP32 microcontrollers.
  • Familiarity with Python and SQL.
  • Knowledge of the MQTT protocol.

What We Do

We’re on a mission to eliminate waste for good, starting with the food that ends up in landfills.

Did you know that more than half of the food in landfills comes from home kitchens (ReFED)? And food in landfills turns into methane – which is 80x more potent than CO2 over a 20-year period (IPCC).

At Mill, we’re working to turn kitchen scraps into food for chickens. This keeps food in our food system and out of landfills.

Why Work With Us

Food isn't trash. Mill keeps it from stinking up your kitchen – and the planet.
