With 34 employees, Morningstar Japan, Inc. (MJ) (part of Morningstar, Inc., a US publicly traded company) has been providing independent investment research in Japan since 2000. Morningstar in Japan offers a broad range of products and services from mutual fund and equity data and research to software solutions and consulting.
The Role:
MJ requires an enthusiastic, detail-driven and savvy Finance Manager to work as part of the finance team to support our financial business operations and business needs. We're looking for a problem solver, someone to bring new ideas and a fresh perspective to our finance team's operations. We are looking for someone who isn't afraid to get into the weeds, bring positive change, and make meaningful contributions. Working closely with the Head of Finance in Japan and with the Asia Pacific Regional CFO, this role requires a candidate that can manage both traditional aspects of financial accounting operations as well as being a key representative of finance to help drive the business forward. We are looking for a candidate who has the potential to become the successor to Head of Finance in Japan after learning all aspects of Finance and Accounting functions at Morningstar.
Job Responsibilities:• To facilitate a controlled finance function locally and with our US parent.• Perform key month and quarter end processes in US GAAP, annual financial close in US GAAP and Japan GAAP.• Ensure accurate and informative monthly reporting on a timely basis.• To ensure all balance sheet accounts are reconciled timely.• To provide key support in the budgeting and forecasting cycle.• Assist with ad hoc projects both locally and offshore that impact the finance function of the business.• Assist the Regional CFO, in building information that facilitates commercially sound decisions for different audiences.• Work closely with local management to provide the necessary information to enable informed decisions.• Participate in cross functional teams in projects and initiatives to enhance ways to drive revenues and mitigate/minimize costs.• Support local HR and Office Administration.
Qualifications:• Sound knowledge of the corporate finance function, accounting operations, and a commercial mindset.• Strong organizational skills together with a proactive approach and a drive to meet required deadlines.• Ability to effectively communicate financial concepts to financial and non-finance staff, influence decision making, and the ability need to work cross functionally with business operations.• Willingness to take initiative and do hands-on work in a start-up-like environment, while being part of a large multinational company.• Strong analytical and lateral thinking abilities.• Knowledge of finance, investments and institutional investing desirable.• Knowledge of Japanese accounting principles is essential.• Familiarity with US GAAP preferred• English and Japanese bilingual preferred• Exposure to international tax, accounting principles and license requirements would be an advantage.• Detailed oriented with a passion for ensuring accuracy.• Advanced Excel skills.• Worked with ERP systems (preferably Oracle Financials and/or Hyperion).• CA/CPA/CIMA qualified or equivalent.• At least 5 years of progressive experience
