Religious Community Services (RCS), a 41-year-old faith-based nonprofit that addresses basic needs in New Bern and Craven County, NC, by providing food, clothing, and shelter to those who need it most, is on the hunt for its next Executive Director. 

Since 1985, RCS has been focused on supporting individuals and families by providing food, clothing, and shelter to those who need it the most in the city of New Bern. In 2023 alone, RCS served more than 94,000 meals, provided more than 14,000 nights of shelter to 180 individuals, completed more than 33,000 emergency food orders, and provided case management for 447 individual cases.

What will you do as RCS’s next Executive Director? 

  • Inspire donors, funders, and government partners to invest deeply in RCS’s commitment to help those who are struggling to achieve positive and lasting life changes 
  • Lead a culture of strategic compassion laser-focused on providing housing, food assistance, and case management services to the most vulnerable adults and families in New Bern and the surrounding region
  • Manage an annual budget of $2 million+ and a sophisticated logistical supply chain and comprehensive system of client supports with a keen eye for detail and fiscal oversight 
  • Coach, lead, and inspire a 20+ member staff and a large volunteer network, nurturing a sense of unity that ensures collaboration and personal accountability, recognizing that many staff members journey daily with those they serve who are facing extraordinary mental, physical, and emotional challenges 
  • Forge alliances with elected officials, city, and county leaders and community partners across a spectrum of human services to support the community’s most vulnerable populations 
  • Partner with the RCS Board of Directors to set the strategic vision, determine the priorities, and ensure the funding that positions RCS to end homelessness and hunger for as many adults and families as possible 
  • Build on the successes of four decades of service to the community and position RCS to surpass all expectations over the next 40 years 

Key lived experiences, attributes, and skillsets sought in the Executive Director 

  • All in on the RCS’s mission, values, and beliefs, exhibiting a deep-rooted compassion and empathy for the clients served by RCS 
  • Proven track record of nonprofit or corporate leadership experience 
  • Detailed-oriented administrator with extensive experience in budget management and fiscal oversight 
  • Creative, innovative, and visionary strategic thinker 
  • Effective fundraiser with a proven track record of successful grant writing and relationship building with individual donors, philanthropic funders, government agencies, and corporate partners 
  • Compassion for and experience with those who have experienced homelessness, food insecurity, and/or trauma, preferred 
  • Inspiring communicator who can motivate staff, Board, donors, partner agencies, government allies, and volunteers from a broad and diverse base of community stakeholders and partners 
  • Knowledge of human resource functions with direct experience in structuring, hiring, onboarding, and continually building a skilled and professional team 
  • Commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in family-friendly workplace

Salary is commensurate with the requirements of the position and begins in the $65K range. Benefits include supplemental health insurance coverage with an allowance for individual premiums as well as access to a company car. Employees receive 11 paid holidays with 10 days of PTO in their first year and 15 days of PTO beginning in their second year of employment.
