Your Role at Pura:

As a Backend Engineering Manager at Pura, you will lead a team of talented Backend IoT engineers, driving the development, iteration, and maintenance of high-impact product features and scalable backend systems. 

What you’ll own:

In this impactful role, you will provide both technical leadership and cross-functional collaboration to drive success in building and maintaining Pura’s IoT backend systems.

As a Technical Leader, you will:

• Manage and mentor a team of 5-8 Backend IoT engineers, fostering a culture of growth and collaboration.
• Regularly pair with engineers to elevate the team’s skills and output.
• Champion quality by establishing best practices, conducting thorough code reviews, and implementing effective testing strategies.
• Balance resolving technical debt with the development of new features to ensure sustainable progress.
• Continuously evaluate team performance, providing constructive feedback, coaching, and mentoring to enhance productivity and growth.
• Optimize developer experience and velocity by reducing context switching and addressing bottlenecks.

As a Cross-Functional Collaborator, you will:

• Partner with Product and Engineering teams to scope work, estimate Level of Effort (LoE), and define clear deliverables.
• Work with Product Managers and Data Analysts to prioritize tasks based on impact and feasibility, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
• Advocate for your team’s priorities and concerns to leadership, ensuring their needs are understood and supported.
• Develop and execute strategies to complete projects on time while delivering high-quality solutions.

Your leadership will empower the team to deliver scalable, reliable software that supports Pura’s IoT ecosystem and enhances user experiences.

Qualifications

• Experience: 6+ years as an individual contributor in software engineering, with a focus on backend systems and cloud architecture (preferably AWS).
• Operational Knowledge: Familiarity with on-call rotations, ensuring system reliability and quick incident response.
• Project Management: Proven ability to manage projects effectively, balancing priorities, timelines, and deliverables.
• Skills: Strong analytical, communication, and organizational abilities, with a focus on driving team success and delivering impactful results.

Nice to Have:

• 1–2 years of people management experience, mentoring and guiding engineers to grow in their roles.
• Experience in IoT systems, including integrating hardware and software components.
• Knowledge of cloud cost forecasting and optimization strategies.
• Familiarity with GDPR compliance or similar regulatory frameworks.
