Purpose of the role
To lead and manage engineering teams, providing technical guidance, mentorship, and support to ensure the delivery of high-quality software solutions, driving technical excellence, fostering a culture of innovation, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to align technical decisions with business objectives.
Accountabilities
- Lead engineering teams effectively, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture to achieve project goals and meet organizational objectives.
- Oversee timelines, team allocation, risk management and task prioritization to ensure the successful delivery of solutions within scope, time, and budget.
- Mentor and support team members' professional growth, conduct performance reviews, provide actionable feedback, and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Evaluation and enhancement of engineering processes, tools, and methodologies to increase efficiency, streamline workflows, and optimize team productivity.
- Collaboration with business partners, product managers, designers, and other stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions and ensure a cohesive approach to product development.
- Enforcement of technology standards, facilitate peer reviews, and implement robust testing practices to ensure the delivery of high-quality solutions.

At Barclays, we don’t just embrace change – we drive it and help craft innovative solutions and looking for hands-on Engineering Lead for Digital Tower in Barclays Payments Merchant Services (BPMS) As an engineering lead you will be responsible for managing engineering delivery - application design, development, testing and live releases - for an application or a portfolio of applications; leading & guiding a team of engineers (application designers, developers, testers and DevOps technicians). Role would be a people leader role primarily, however should have ability to play role of an Individual contributor in Engineering if required.
To be successful as an Engineering Manager, you should have experience with
- Ability to lead large mission critical application portfolio and platform. Ability to provide technical leadership to complex technical problems. Strong understanding of enterprise design principles to build secure, fault tolerant and scalable systems. Goods hands on experience in Java or any other programming language.
- Good hands-on experience in front end UI development. Strong background and hands on experience in Digital.
- Transformation and Engineering Transformation. Strong understanding of application development methodologies (SDLC, Agile, etc.) Strong understanding of testing methodologies like TDD, BDD etc and testing automation. Strong Knowledge of Cloud concepts, DevOps and CI:CD. Good Knowledge on Release and Change Management process (ITIL).
Some other highly valued skills may include
- Good understanding of Cards Acquiring and Payments domain. Appreciation of C4 models, Event Driven Architecture & Domain Driven Design. Strong knowledge of software containerization concept and Docker.
- Knowledge in issue tracking tools like JIRA. Good understanding, Tracking and reporting of Engineering/DORA Metrics Understanding of Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe).
