Engineering Manager, Core

You can build just about anything on Bubble. For example, all new hires build Bubble apps as part of their onboarding, and a recent hire on our Customer Success team built their own version of the social media application Goodreads in 4 days. It has user authentication, an activity feed, upvotes, commenting, followers, lists, account management, live updates, a fully loaded database, API connectivity, and more.

About the Core team:
As part of the team working on Bubble’s core product, the Bubble Editor, you will help enhance our drag-and-drop interface that empowers users to build and design their applications. We’re a full stack team, responsible for building everything from accessible user interfaces to database schemas housing entire Bubble applications. Our current focus includes modernizing the developer interface to support our upcoming mobile product, embedding AI guidance into the Editor experience, and reimagining data management for Bubble apps.

About the role:

The Core team currently consists of two separate pods working across the vast expanse of our Editor product. Each pod is staffed with its own product and design support and conducts its own agile ceremonies for maximum efficiency. The two pods come together to collaborate on tough technical challenges and support each other through pair programming, PR review, and technical design discussion. 

You’ll be managing the Core: Blue Pod, which currently has seven engineers at various levels in their career. You will be responsible for each engineer's career growth, ensuring they are progressing towards their goals and love their experience working at Bubble. You’ll also lead the team, in collaboration with Product and Design, to build complex new features that expand the current capabilities of our Editor.

As an Engineering Manager, you’ll focus on: 

• Speed and quality of delivery – collaborate with Product and Design to build helpful processes that ensure your engineers can build software as efficiently as possible while maintaining a high bar for product quality.

• Technical innovation and investment – help us set technical quality standards for our codebase, and ensure the team is making proper debt investments while making progress on product roadmaps.

• Career development and hiring – help expand, uplevel, and promote your engineers in an equitable fashion, ensuring every individual has the same opportunity for success. 

• Cultural development – help build an engineering culture of shared success and shared failure, driving inclusion, equity, and continuous learning.

• Problem solving – help your team work through tricky technical challenges, mentor them, and up level their problem-solving skills.

• Strategic collaboration - work closely with product managers, engineering managers, leadership, and senior/staff engineers to align your with other product teams and help deliver results for Bubble as a whole.

About you: 

• Most qualified candidates will be a current staff/principal engineer, tech lead, engineering manager, or senior engineering manager, with at least 1 year of people management/mentorship experience required. 

• While no specific technologies are a hard requirement, we value prior experience with React and/or SolidJS, Typescript, and full-stack web development.

Engineering managers aren’t required to ship code directly, but comfort with our tech stack will help you mentor your team through technical challenges. Our tech stack includes:

• Frontend: Typescript, SolidJS

• Backend: Typescript, Node.js, Rust, Redis, Postgres, TimescaleDB

• Infrastructure: AWS - CDK / Terraform / Lambda, Kafka, ECS, Typescript, Elastic

Compensation:

We offer competitive compensation aligned to tier one markets. Our estimated salary for this role at Bubble ranges from $174,000 to $210,000. Actual pay is determined by multiple factors such as skills, qualifications, experience and market demand.

Location: 

For this role, Bubble is currently only considering candidates who are authorized to work in the US and are within the New York City metro area.

We prefer hiring people within commuting distance of our NYC office because we value getting together in person regularly. For those who enjoy working from our Manhattan office on a more regular basis, we offer catered lunches, and happy hours, among other fun perks.

Compensation Range: $174K - $210K
