Position Title: Elm Team Lead

Reporting To: Director of Engineering

Location: Chapel Hill, NC; Minneapolis, MN; Boston, MA (Newton); New York, NY; Remote in approved locations

Compensation: $150,000-180,000/year, depending on experience and level of expertise as a software engineer (e.g., Senior Software Engineer 3, Senior Software Engineer 4, or Principal Software Engineer 1), plus bonus potential and benefits 

Job Summary: Join our team as an Elm Team Lead, where your primary role will be hands-on software development with added responsibilities in technical and people leadership. You will collaborate with backend, frontend (mobile and web) developers, data scientists, and product managers to develop our world-class technology platform. Your contributions will ensure efficient, secure, and maintainable solutions are delivered to thousands of users. Experience in the healthcare industry is a plus.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Hands-On Development: Actively participate in coding and software development, focusing on new user-facing features and improvements to our existing services ecosystem.
  • Technical Leadership: Contribute to platform architectural decisions and enhance the team's ability to make informed decisions.
  • Team Management: Lead and manage a team of software professionals, ensuring high developer quality and productivity. Prioritize high-level work and represent the Elm/Web team in organizational discussions and projects.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with mobile, backend, and data science teams, as well as product and delivery managers, to create a seamless user experience.
  • Operational Excellence: Participate in and lead code reviews, quality assurance, and production monitoring to achieve operational excellence.
  • Security: Ensure the security and safety of all Well systems and data, following Well's data and security policies and HIPAA guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in Elm and related web development technologies, with a broad interest in other programming languages.
  • Minimum of 3 years of team leadership experience.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles, tools, patterns, algorithms/libraries, and systems design.
  • Ability to make informed micro and macro-level decisions in software development.
  • Proficiency in coding and resolving complex technical challenges.
  • Willingness to learn new patterns, languages, and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of microservices and monolith patterns, including their trade-offs.
  • Experience with modern cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • Understanding of the HTTP stack and REST APIs.
  • Knowledge of databases and their trade-offs.
  • Experience with backend-for-frontend design, especially for Android and iOS applications.
  • Healthcare industry experience is a plus.
  • Understanding of security principles in software development, particularly for consumer-facing applications.
