The Role
The Electrical Engineer will design and develop avionics systems and electronics hardware for aerospace applications, collaborating with design teams to ensure functionality and compliance with specifications. Responsibilities include circuit design, hardware-software interface development, and reliability analyses, with a focus on delivering high-quality avionics for flight applications.
Summary Generated by Built In

Ursa Major was founded to address a critical shortfall in the U.S. industrial base and bring a new model to aerospace and defense systems: we design and manufacture the world’s leading propulsion systems for space, hypersonic applications, and missile systems.

Our products and technologies require an extraordinary team – a team that will mold tomorrow’s technologies while deploying today’s best. We are an intrinsically motivated team that has a passion for solving problems and empowering each other every day to develop our skills, knowing that there is always room for growth.

Our propulsion systems cannot function without sensors, actuators, controllers, and other electronic hardware functioning well together. You will work with our Design and Development teams to design avionics systems that meet the requirements of our systems and customers. In this role you will be responsible for developing avionics hardware to interface measurement and control components to control software. The hardware will interface with measurement devices and actuators such and valves, pressure sensors, temperature sensors, accelerometers, BLDC motors, and communication busses. Having a solid foundation in electronics for harsh environments and a desire to build avionics for space applications is a must. You will help us define and implement our verification strategy using best practices and customer inputs.

Responsibilities:

· Develop mixed-signal designs and shepherd them through the full product life-cycle; including requirements definition, design, development, qualification and release to production.

· Support avionics architecture trade studies, analyses, performance characterization and specification, device selection, and roadmap direction.

· Perform de-rating analysis, worst case circuit analysis, FMECA, and system reliability analysis.

· Develop avionics systems that interface with sensors and actuators.

· Support definition and implementation of hardware to software interfaces to implement control law and automated test functions.

· Support risk analyses, design for test/manufacture/cost, and root-cause analysis of test discrepancies.

· Participate in program level technology development, mission and safety objectives, and avionics development process improvements.

· Support rocket engine testing and ground support as necessary

Requirements Qualifications:

· Demonstrated experience in delivering flight avionics for aircraft, launch vehicles, or other space applications.

· B.S. in Electrical or Computer Engineering or related field with 5+ years of direct experience in electronics hardware development

· Understanding of analog/digital filtering, mixed-signal circuit design, analysis, and test design.

· Knowledge of signal integrity, power, grounding, and general board layout principles

· Understanding of sensor and actuator technologies including: RTD’s, Pressure Transducers, DC brushless motors, Solenoid valves, Thermocouples, Hydraulic servo valves, LVDT, RVDT, Rotary/Linear Encoders.

· Working knowledge of EMI/EMC practices and; MIL-461, DO-160, or FCC compliance

Desired Experience:

· Direct experience in launch vehicle avionics systems integration

· Graduate degree in related engineering or technical field with 10+ years of direct experience in electronics hardware development

· Demonstrated expertise designing Class 3 board assemblies

· Utilizing IPC 6xx and NASA-STD-8739.n (or similar) standards.

· Proficiency using KiCad (or similar tools) to design complex boards; and experience working with external board manufacturing and assembly vendors.

· A desire to design mission critical hardware for flight applications.

· Working knowledge of high-reliability, radiation-tolerant, radiation-hardened flight hardware intended for high altitude and space environments.

· Proficiency with scripting; programming and analysis/modeling tools: Python, Linux/Windows shell scripting; assembly language, C, C++; MATLAB / Simulink / SPICE (or similar)

· Exposure to designing safety or mission critical aerospace flight hardware compliant with DO-254.

Colorado law requires us to tell you the base compensation range of this role, which is $95,000- $155,000, determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The salary range for this role is intentionally wide as we are evaluating individuals based on their unique experience and abilities to fit our needs. Most importantly, we are excited to meet you, and see if you are a great fit for our team. What we can’t quantify for you are the exciting challenges, supportive team, and amazing culture we enjoy.

What We Do

At Ursa Major, we are powering the future of aerospace. We see aerospace advancement as a technological imperative and we’re accelerating the industry as the leading source of world-class propulsion systems.

We meticulously design, craft, and test engines that are optimized to offer high performance, diverse capability, and unwavering reliability.

Why Work With Us

As much as we value talent, we know that it’s meaningless without the drive, humility, and hunger to work on a team. A team shares a common goal and obsesses about achieving it together. This requires leaving egos at the door and committing to do whatever’s required (within reason) to achieve mission success.
