Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist

This role represents an inspiring opportunity to support EHS (Environmental, Health, and Safety) initiatives at our PowderPure facility in The Dalles, OR. As a member of the site leadership team, this role will utilize your technical background and engagement skills to work with plant teams on a variety of site environmental, health, and safety projects.  The successful candidate should have a strong working knowledge of environmental, health, and safety practices, a positive mindset, excellent problem-solving capability, and excellent communication skills.

Job Description/Primary Duties

  • Lead or work with site(s) teams on efforts to ensure compliance with regulatory and corporate requirements, site(s) procedure development and updates, environmental risk assessments, and compliance inspections.
  • Collaborate with all levels and functions and other EHS resources to interpret, analyze, and provide training and/or communications on new or updated EHS standards and guidelines. Perform PPE analysis, make recommendations, and order PPE and safety supplies.
  • Lead actively contribute or develop   Safety Teams at the plant and amongst other IFF sites while identifying new opportunities for employees to become engaged in safety.
  • Conduct EHS orientation training, annual EHS compliance, and EHS refresher training for plant employees
  • Stay current with basic regulations (regulatory & corporate) and interact with regulatory agencies on EHS issues
  • Provide support for air, water, waste, and other environmental regulatory and internal program requirements based on the specific needs of the site. 
  • Create and maintain environmental management systems to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, site permits, and corporate standards.
  • Lead environmental performance continuous improvement efforts.
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation and submission of all required reporting to federal, state, and local agencies along with corporate reporting guidelines.
  • Lead and support the preparation of permit applications.
  • Complete environmental regulation applicability determinations (i.e., permit modifications)
  • Interface with regulatory agencies, prepare required documentation, schedule any required testing, and provide additional follow-up documentation as required.
  • Develop strategies for IH sampling and analytical methods for a multitude of Occupational Health programs, (i.e., Occupational Noise, Air/Toxic Monitoring, Enzyme, etc.)
  • Prepare and submit reports to regulatory agencies as required by law under the supervision of management
  • Participating in near miss, incident, and injury investigations with operational teams to successfully mitigate/prevent future occurrences utilizing RCFA Methodologies
  • Coordination of site SDS inventory and new chemical introductions
  • Lead and participate in 1st party EHS audits and coordinate site(s) 2nd and 3rd party EHS audits.

Requirements

  • BS or higher degree in EHS, chemical or environmental engineering, environmental science, or closely related science field is required.
  • Professional Certification CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or equivalent desired
  • Two to five relevant years of work experience in an Environmental, Health, or Safety role
  • Demonstrated functional/technical expertise and a moderate level of experience in multiple environmental competencies such as air, water/wastewater, and waste. 
  • Knowledge of ISO 14001 requirements  
  • The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, self-starter who can work independently with minimal day-to-day direction. Additionally, the successful candidate will be one who can deal with fast-changing and sometimes conflicting priorities and who possesses strong organization and planning skills. 
  • Strong networking skills and interpersonal relations are all important.
  • Demonstrated written and oral skills are essential.  Knowledge of computer software such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint plus the ability to quickly learn the use of new and varied computer-based systems is required.
  • Familiar or experience with DCS control and DCS historian systems is beneficial.
  • Excellent communication skills and the desire to work with a multidisciplinary team
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industrial hygiene general principles and monitoring
  • Some travel required (Less than 10%)
