Job Description

Rare opportunity for a high performing individual who is looking to excel in a collaborative science driven organization. The Director of North America Commercial Field Training – Heme is responsible for leading the training efforts for Vertex’s hemoglobinopathies (sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia) commercial therapeutic area. This individual will lead a team of trainers focused on delivering disease, product, and competency-based training across multiple field teams in the US.

The ideal candidate must possess a unique blend of pharmaceutical training experience and scientific aptitude that will enable them to lead through application of learning best practices and subject matter expertise. The individual must be a strong collaborator able to work cross-functionally within the Heme Commercial Team (Sales, Marketing, Patient Experience and Customer Operations, and Market Access) and across the broader organization (Medical Affairs, HR, Legal, Regulatory and Compliance teams).

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Lead a team of training and development professionals, including identifying and hiring talent to support the growth of their training team
  • Work cross-functionally to develop, deliver and evaluate training programs, curricula and corresponding training materials and programs for field representatives and field leadership
  • Design all relevant training modules and onboarding materials in accordance with Medical, Marketing, Regulatory and Legal guidance
  • Proactively identify training needs and develop effective strategies for deployment to field teams
  • Organize, facilitate and continually improve field team(s) training and orientation, including the roll-out of new materials, messages, and tools
  • Work with Commercial cross-functional teams to plan, design and deliver all training at National Meetings and POAs
  • Develop advanced training curricula for current field team members to improve skills throughout their tenure and meet business goals
  • Proactively conduct on-going communications with field management and other key stakeholders to identify training needs and develop role-specific training objectives and strategies to meet those needs
  • Hold joint responsibility for creating and implementing field organizational development plans
  • Represent Learning and Development in brand and business planning and product launches and/or label expansions
  • Partner with HR team to ensure alignment with company learning and development philosophy
  • Manage the identification and selection of vendors, and subsequent relationships and projects relating to field training
  • Stay abreast of learning, training and development best practices and current trends in pharmaceutical and life science industries - utilizing current advances within digital, live, and virtual platforms
  • Complete ad hoc projects and analyses relating to group responsibilities as requested

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a preference for an advanced degree in business or sciences
  • 10+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry
  • 3+ years pharmaceutical/biotech industry commercial training role
  • Leadership experience, specifically in managing the identification and development of commercial resources to solve business challenges
  • Experience in adult education principles including competency modeling
  • Proven project management, presentation, and interpersonal (both verbal and written) communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage projects that require collaboration across functional areas including Marketing, Market Research, Market Access, Medical Affairs, HR, Corporate Compliance, etc.
  • Able to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and collaborate across groups
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required
  • Preferred experience in cell and genetic therapies, hospital-based selling, and/or hemoglobinopathies

Pay Range:

$191,700 - $287,600

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.

In this Hybrid-Eligible role, you can choose to be designated as: 
1.    Hybrid: work remotely up to two days per week; or select
2.    On-Site: work five days per week on-site with ad hoc flexibility.
