Our LEO System Engineering team is responsible for the end-to-end architecture design, Lightspeed requirements definition, flow down and management, concepts of operations, and interface requirements definition and tracking.
As Director of LEO System Engineering, you will lead all engineering aspects of the Telesat Lightspeed architecture design and implementation, ensuring effective coordination between your team and Lightspeed teams responsible for other segments of the system. In particular, you will lead the definition of the functional and performance requirements applicable to the satellite payload, user terminals, and landing stations.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide technical leadership on all end-to-end system engineering aspects of the Telesat Lightspeed system
- Lead the definition of the performance required of all elements in the entire satellite communication system. The candidate will lead all technical aspects of the system architecture of the Telesat Lightspeed systems in terms of air interface definition, concept of operations, functional descriptions and physical implementation of the system functions.
- Define the functional and performance requirements related to the radio system function as applicable to the satellite payload, user terminals and landing stations, involving agile multi-beam phased array antennas using beam hopping. This involves defining and optimizing the details of the air interface implemented between the satellites and the ground units.
- Lead the utilization of Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) to develop a comprehensive view of all system interaction of all elements in the system.
- Stay involved within DVB standard forum and provide recommendations as part of Telesat’s engagement on the forum.
- Lead the generation of the technical requirements, change management and technical analyses required to justify the technical requirements.
- Lead the development of CONOPS documentation
- Lead the development of technical system budgets such as link budgets, availability and timing among others.
- Maintain up to date predicted service performance based on actual / latest system performance using budgets and
- Develop software tools and utility software to be used in the pre-sales activities by the commercial teams
- Work with Integration & Test teams to support the development of proper validation of system requirements.
- Organize system level design reviews.
- Attend segment level design reviews.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- B. Sc. in Electrical, Computer, or System Engineering and at least 15 years of relevant experience in RF communications systems and/or RF equipment manufacturing.
- Experience in system design, requirement management, and communication systems performance assessments
- Desired knowledge of DVB standards such as DVB-S2X and DVB-RCS2 standard
- Desired knowledge of digital communication systems, spread spectrum, single and multi-carrier techniques, modulation types such as PSK, APSK, QAM
- Desired knowledge of RF passive and active components
- Highly collaborative team player who can quickly earn the confidence of co-workers and teammates.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, demonstrating that you have communicated effectively with management, engineering teams, and partners/suppliers.
DECISION MAKING & SUPERVISION:
- In this role, the incumbent will provide leadership and make important technical recommendations on implementing the Lightspeed System design.
- This role will expand during the program to an organization of between 20 and 35 engineering staff approximately.

The successful candidate must be able to work in Canada and obtain clearance under the Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP).
