The Director, Group Underwriting leads a regional team of underwriters responsible for the risk assessment and financial underwriting for employer groups in their segment. They will be accountable for the team’s performance and results, including meeting revenue, persistency, and profitability targets. The Director effectively uses strong organization, leadership and superior technical skills to develop the staff’s underwriting and business acumen.

The current employee work arrangement for this position is hybrid and requires your on-site presence on a reoccurring basis as determined by your business. Your manager will provide additional details relative to the specific number of days you are expected to be on-site.

What you can expect:

  • Daily leadership of the regional territory, including managing workflow, case assignments and staffing.

  • Responsible for strategic planning at a market or regional level including participation in multi-year planning efforts and making projections based on emerging account experience and trends.

  • Financial responsibility for assigned book of business. including attainment of profitability (pricing target), revenue, and persistency goals with strong decision making and influencing skills.

  • Accountable for developing and supporting a culture of high performance and talent excellence, through effective recruiting, coaching and development of staff as well as supporting diverse talent initiatives.

  • Apply an awareness of industry trends, competitive landscape, and factors that influence the marketplace and the regulatory environment to facilitate and develop strong pricing, risk selection, and decision making across a regional portfolio of risks as well as mitigate operational risks and optimize our processes.

  • Perform/support quality review efforts and accountable for team’s adherence to all policies and procedures.

  • Accountable for actively monitoring both financial and process execution performance and providing clear feedback, direction, and training as needed to improve consistency and quality of performance throughout the team.

  • Collaborate with partners across functional lines to meet organizational objectives. Frequent interaction with other Underwriting teams, Distribution, Actuarial, Claims and other functional and control units.

  • Independently communicate and negotiate with both internal partners and external partners including key clients, brokers, and consultants (i.e. finalist meetings, training, town halls, renewal discussions, sales meetings).

  • Actively engage in supporting the positive consultative outcomes crucial to our long-term success including case reviews.

  • Serve as a role model and change champion.

  • Lead or contribute to cross-functional projects/key strategic initiatives that help drive pricing strategy and set the strategic direction for the business unit.

  • Contribute new strategic ideas that could lead to process efficiencies and/or product development and help drive pricing strategy decisions and setting strategic direction for the business unit. Expected to educate, inform, influence Senior Leadership of GI regarding business decisions that affect portfolio results.

  • Responsible for the development and execution of policies/procedures.

  • May include travel, has a visible presence in support of market/regional level strategies.  

What you’ll need:

  • Candidates should have a minimum of 10 years Group Insurance Life and/or Disability Product and Underwriting experience.

  • Possess strong business acumen, general business writing, organization, presentation, and time management skills.

  • Strong leadership, training, and mentoring skills.

  • Comfort level dealing with numbers, analytics, and problem solving.

  • Proficient in Microsoft WORD, Access, and PowerPoint.

  • Excellent EXCEL skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal skills with internal/external clients.

  • Resourcefulness, flexibility, and creativity.

  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

  • Ability to generate creative solutions, proactive problem solver.

What we offer you:Prudential is required by state specific laws to include the salary range for this role when hiring a resident in applicable locations. The salary range for this role is from $141,100.00 to $191,000.00. Specific pricing for the role may vary within the above range based on many factors including geographic location, candidate experience, and skills.

  • Market competitive base salaries, with a yearly bonus potential at every level.
