Product Design Manager

Summary

The Product Design Manager will lead our Product Design team, overseeing the career development and growth of five design professionals. She will be responsible for the quality and accessibility of our product designs, and will work closely with Product Managers to implement new features and with our Analytics team to measure their effectiveness. She and her team will be responsible for managing designs of all our digital products (website, app, email newsletters, etc.) and for interpreting our overall company brand guidelines into our products. This position reports to our Chief Technology and Product Officer

What You'll Do
 

  • Establish and maintain a design vision and standard for our
    digital products
  • Align our product designs and interactions with our brand guidelines, marketing assets and print product
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Product to ensure initiatives are defined accurately and scoped carefully, and to discover
    alternate ways to reach goals
  • With our Analytics team, use behavioral data to adjust interactions, and identify components that could benefit from A/B or
    multivariate testing
  • Partner with our editorial teams on special projects,
    providing feedback
    and critique of ongoing projects
  • Oversee a team of four designers and a user researcher,
    managing their career development and growth, and
    delivering constructive feedback with clarity and compassion
  • Manage the workloads and priorities of your designers, as they
    align with Product Managers and may have multiple ongoing projects
  • Effectively speak to process, design goals, and team vision
    with cross functional partners, executives, and stakeholders

Who We're Looking For

 

 

  • Five years or more of experience designing digital products for
    consumers (experience with media and information products is a plus)
  • One year or more of experience mentoring and managing careers of designers and researchers
    (including training, work assignments, prioritization, etc.)
  • Experience working with engineers and product managers to improve strategy, vision, and execution and push the best
    work forward
  • Experience balancing creative and analytical design goals, and
    making product and design tradeoffs
  • Be an advocate for our readers; help drive empathetic, human
    centric design across all our products to solve true user problems
  • Ability to solve complex UX and product strategy problems to
    deliver the best possible design solutions, with strong familiarity of
    industry best practices
  • Experience building and nurturing a design process and team
    culture of iteration, inclusion, divergent thinking, and
    creative solution co-development
  • Experience with building/iterating and promoting design systems
  • Impeccable taste and understanding of high quality interaction design
  • Familiarity with prototyping tools and bringing work to life
  • Desire to support journalistic efforts, and alignment with our mission to inform and inspire the people in the Philadelphia region
  • Friendly, respectful and collaborative in interactions with colleagues.

  • Prior experience within a news or media organization, particularly in designing information experiences
  • Portfolio of projects/products/processes that show innovative thinking around aligning user needs and company performance goals
  • Familiarity with WCAG Web accessibility standards
  • Familiarity with JIRA and Confluence
  • Familiarity with Philadelphia or surrounding areas
  • Familiarity with managing remote and mixed in-office / remote teams
